Starting a FaceTime Call

FaceTime remains a reliable way to make video or audio calls using an iPhone. With iOS 18, starting a FaceTime call is simple. You can tap the “New FaceTime” button, select the person you want to call, and choose whether to make it a video or audio call. If the person is using an Apple device, the call will connect using FaceTime. If they aren’t using Apple devices, a new option in iOS 18 allows you to send a FaceTime link instead.

Creating and Sharing FaceTime Links

iOS 18 allows you to create a FaceTime link that can be shared with anyone, including people who do not use Apple devices. After tapping “Create Link,” you can send the link using Mail, Messages, or another app. When the person receives the link, they can join the FaceTime call through a web browser. This is especially helpful for family members or friends who use Windows or Android devices.

Audio Call Options

Once a FaceTime audio call begins, several options are available during the call. You can switch the audio output, mute the microphone, or transfer the call to a video call. There is also an option to add people to the call, making it a group call. These controls appear at the top of the screen during the call and are easy to access.

Video Call Features

Video calls in FaceTime include many of the same options as audio calls. You can mute the microphone, switch between the front and back cameras, turn your camera on or off, and adjust the audio. You also have the option to add effects, such as filters or text labels, and to add other people to the call. If someone is using a non-Apple device, you can still include them by sharing a FaceTime link.

Screen Sharing in iOS 18

One of the most helpful features added in iOS 18 is the ability to share your screen during a FaceTime call. This is especially useful when you want to help someone with their device or show something from your screen. When on a call, you can tap the screen sharing button and choose what to share. The other person will then see exactly what’s on your screen. This makes FaceTime more practical for support and collaboration.

Taking FaceTime Photos

Another feature available during a video call is the ability to take a FaceTime photo. If both users agree to allow it, a photo can be taken during the call by pressing the shutter button. This is a quick way to capture a memory from a video chat and save it to your Photos app.

Reviewing and Deleting Past Calls

FaceTime also keeps a record of your past calls. You can view your call history within the FaceTime app and redial any recent contacts with a tap. If needed, you can also delete individual calls from the list to keep it organized.
