Emergency Reset and Manage Sharing & Access with Safety Check on the iPhone
With Safety Check, you can quickly reset access to your information, or you can use it to manage which people and apps have access to your information.
Safety Check is a new feature Apple added in iOS 16, and what it helps you do is quickly reset who has access to your information, including location, calendars, and photos. You can also set what devices are connected to your Apple ID, who your Emergency SOS contact is, and reset your Apple ID Password. You can use Emergency Reset for the emergency situations where you just want to turn sharing off for everyone, or you can use Manage Sharing & Access for more granular options. Learn about Safety Check and how it can help you manage who you are sharing your information with in this video for iOS 16 on the iPhone.
Video TranscriptionIn this video, we’re going to look at safety check on the iPhone. With iOS 16, Apple introduced a new feature called safety check. And safety check what you can do is easily and quickly disconnect from people, apps and devices you no longer want to be connected to. So if you’re sharing information with someone, what you can do is select that person or select that app that you are sharing that information with, and no longer share that information. Let’s see how this works. Let’s go over to my iPhone. Now the first thing we need to do is go to our privacy and security settings. In order to do that, we need to go to our settings app. In our settings app, we swipe up until we find privacy and security.
Under Privacy and Security down towards the bottom, you’re going to see safety check. Again, safety check allows us to disconnect from people apps and devices we no longer want to be connected with. To see what information let’s go ahead and tap on this. To see what information is affected by this. And to learn more about safety check. What you can do is tap on Learn More. When you tap on Learn More, a card opens up from apple.com. And then from here, we can read more about safety check, we can see how safety check on the iPhone works to keep us safe. We can also see what it does. And then we can also see which Apple apps will stop sharing information when we no longer want to share that information. So we have a lot of information in here. If you want to read more about safety check. Let’s go over to safety check. I’m going to tap on Done here. And we’re going to take a look at this in a little bit more detail. Let’s first look at emergency reset. Emergency reset is used to immediately stop sharing your information. It stops sharing your information with people and with apps.
Also, what it will do is it’ll allow you to review and reset your settings associated with your Apple ID. This could be your password, this could be your phone number for two factor authentication. I’ve looked at this as more of a global option. Basically, it’s just going to reset everything. You’re not going to decide who you want to share information with or who you want to not share information with which apps you do not want to share information with. All this does is this is a blanket statement, we’re going to stop sharing information. Let’s go ahead and tap on it, you’re going to see that basically there are three steps, the first option you have is you can reset your people in app. So this is who you’re sharing your information with which apps you’re sharing your information with. Once you do that, you go through your account security here, this is where you can reset your Apple ID and your phone number that is associated with two factor authentication. And then what you’re able to do is add and remove emergency contacts. So I’ll just step you through this. And basically, there’s not a lot of options with this.
All it’s going to do is just stop sharing your information with people on apps, then it’s going to allow you to view your account information. And then from there, you can view your Emergency Contacts. So this works really quick if you just want to immediately stop sharing information with everyone and with every app. Now at any time, when you’re going through this emergency reset, what you can do is go up to quick exit in the upper right hand corner. When you tap on Quick Access, what it’ll do is it’ll immediately go over to the home screen.
So I tap on quick exit. And we can see it took me over to the home screen. So if you’re in the middle of doing an emergency reset, and someone walks up behind you, and you don’t want them to know what you’re doing, all you have to do is just go to quick exit. Now as you make your changes, let’s go back over to our privacy and security and safety check. As you make your changes with any one of these the emergency reset, or the manage sharing and access. What the iPhone will do is it’ll save that information. So if we go to emergency reset, and I go and reset my people in apps, and then I’m at the next step account and security. If I go to Quick Exit, it’ll save any changes I made with people on apps. So you do not have to go through all the process and then save it’ll save it as you’re being stepped through the process. So that’s emergency reset,
I’m not going to actually run through an emergency reset because I do not want to do that on my iPhone, because it just stops everything. But what I am going to do is go back and what we’re able to do is step through the manage sharing and access. This gives you a little bit more granular control. You’re able to select which apps to stop sharing information from, you’re able to select which people you no longer want to share your information. With. So it’s a little bit more granular as opposed to all or nothing, which is what the emergency reset does. So let’s go ahead and tap on manage sharing and access. And we’re going to see how this works. I tap on it, we get a little card explaining what we’re going to be going through again, we have our three steps. This time, what we’re going to do is review our people. This is who we are sharing our information with, we can also review our apps, that’s a second step. And then we’re going to take a look at account security. So those are the three steps. As you can see, it’s much like emergency reset, but we get to actually choose which people we want to stop information sharing with. So now let’s go and tap on Continue.
And here we are sharing with people. So right now what I am able to do is select who I want to stop sharing my information with. Once you select the people, then what you can do is you can select what information you are sharing that person with. As an example, let’s go with Abigail, we can see that I’m sharing my photos with her if I was sharing my contacts with her, or if I was sharing my calendar, where there I’d see that as well. When I tap on Abigail here, and then go to review sharing, what I’m able to do is select which information I want to stop sharing with Abigail. Now I am only sharing my photos with her so I only see photos with her. But if I was sharing my calendar with her or my contacts with her, I’d be able to select those as well. So in addition to selecting which people I want to stop sharing information with, I can select what information I no longer want to share with them. We can do the reverse. Let’s go back over to people here. We also have information. So this is the reverse. Right now I select the people who I no longer want to share information with and then I can select what information I no longer want to share with them.
Well, when I go over to information, it flips that around. Now I can see what information I no longer want to share. And then when I go down to review, I can select who I no longer want to share that information with. So it’s basically doing the same thing. It just depends on how you want to look at it. Do you want to go by people, or do you want to go by information, let’s go back, I’m going to tap on back in the upper left hand corner. Now I’m just going to deselect photos here. And I’m going to skip this. Our next step is for what we are sharing publicly. Right now I am sharing four albums publicly, what I can do is I can tap on this and then tap on stop sharing. And it will stop sharing those four albums publicly. I’m going to cancel here. And I’m going to tap on photos here. And we’re going to skip this. So so far, we’ve covered people. And then we’ve also covered what we want to share publicly.
I’m going to skip we’re going to go next. So now step one is complete. We’ve reviewed who I’m sharing my information with or what information I’m sharing, and who I am sharing that information with. Our next step is to review our apps. So let’s go ahead and tap on Continue. In addition to sharing information with people, our apps, our contacts, our photos, our calendars can also be shared with other apps. This is what we’re going to look at here. So I’m looking at apps here, I have an app called on the way I’m sharing my location with that app. If I no longer want to share that information, I can tap on this. And then I can stop that app accessing my location. I have zoom on here, if I no longer want to have zoom access my camera photos, as well as other information, I can tap on this, and I can stop app access. If I want to see what information I’m sharing with that app. What I do is I go over to the eye here. And now what I’m able to do is see what information I’m sharing with that app. So zoom, I’m sharing my camera photos, Calendar and Contacts. And I can select any or all of these to stop sharing that information with Zoom. I’m going to go back.
We can also do the reverse, just like we did with people, sorry, and I’m looking at it from an app point of view. Well, maybe what I’d like to do is look at it from an information point of view. What apps am I sharing my location with? Well, all we have to do is just go over to information. And now I can see my location is shared with the way I can see that my camera is shared with Zoom and Mike calendar is also shared with Zoom. So I can look at it from information as well. And again, I can select any one of these, and then stop sharing. And I can view when I tap on the I hear all the different apps that that information has been shared with. So again, we can look at it two different ways there. I’m going to skip this. So now step two is complete. Step one was being people and who are sharing our information with step two, our apps and who we are sharing our information with which apps we are sharing our information with. Now, let’s go over to step three.
What step three, what I’m able to do is see is where hold the devices that are signed in with my Apple ID. So you can see that I have quite a few devices here signed in with my Apple ID. If I no longer want to have that device associated with my Apple ID, all I have to do is just select it, and then I can remove that device. And that device will not be connected to or associated with my Apple ID. So this is how you can quickly deactivate a device that maybe belongs to someone that you no longer want to associate with, you can just go in here and disassociate that device.
Let’s go and skip this. Our next option here as for trusted phone Numbers, with trusted phone Numbers, what we can do is we can add and remove different phone Numbers from our account. Now these phone Numbers are used for two factor authentication, you’ve probably seen it to where when you log into a site, particularly Apple, what you may need to do is enter in a code that is sent to your phone. This is the phone number that Apple will send that code to. So if you have a new phone number, you’ll want to make sure that you put that phone number in here, if you no longer want to have it being sent to another phone number, you can remove that other phone number right here. So basically, what you’re able to do is remove any phone Numbers and add new phone Numbers for two factor authentication. Let’s go ahead and tap on Continue. Our next option is for our Apple ID password. From here, what we’re able to do is just basically update our Apple ID password, you want to change your password, maybe somebody else knows what that password is. So now you need to change it. This is where you can go and change it. I’m going to go down to the bottom and tap on update later. I don’t want to update my password here. We have Emergency SOS. With Emergency SOS. What this is, is this adds an emergency contact. So what I’d like to do is actually add Beth in here as an emergency contact. So this is where you can add and remove your Emergency Contacts what is Emergency SOS used for Fall detections if you have a new phone, it could be used for the new car crash detection. So basically, I just tap on Add emergency contact, I go and find Beth.
And now I just go and put her as my spouse. And now I’ve just added her as an emergency contact, I’m going to continue. Our next step is for updating my device passcode. This is the passcode that is used on the iPhone. So if you want to change the passcode, what you’re able to do is entering your current passcode. And then you can go and change it. I’m going to leave mine as is. So I’m just going to tap on skip here. I should have mentioned this earlier, but we still have our quick exit up here. So what you were able to do at any time, or what I was able to do it anytime is go to my home screen just by tapping on that. So if someone was walking up behind me while I was going through this process, I could easily go to my home screen. And then what I’d be able to do is continue at a later time. So that is our safety check.
Basically, we have two options, we have an emergency reset, where basically it’s just a global option, we have three steps. And basically what it’ll do is it’ll just remove all of our sharing access. And then we also have an option to do this on a more granular control we can see which people we are sharing that information with and review that we can see which apps we are sharing our information with and review that as well. And then of course we can go and change our password or two factor authentication phone number we can see which devices are associated with our apple id we can change our passcode so that is our safety check. It’s a great way to review which people you are sharing your information with and which apps you are sharing information with. All you have to do is just go to your settings and then go to privacy and security and then find safety check you can do an emergency reset or you can manage it more granularly so that safety check that was introduced with the iPhone and iOS 16.
