Change the Location of Safari’s Address Bar

Introduction

Safari on the iPhone gives you a few different ways to use the Address Bar, and depending on how you hold your phone or browse the web, one layout may feel more comfortable than another. Apple introduced a new location for the Address Bar a few versions ago, moving it to the bottom of the screen by default. While many people adjusted to it quickly, others preferred the traditional location at the top.

The good news is that you are not stuck with one setup. Safari lets you choose between a CompactBottom, or TopAddress Bar layout. Each one changes how Safari looks and behaves slightly, and you can switch between them at any time.

In this article, I’ll show you what the Address Bar is, explain the different positions available, and show you how to change it.

What Is the Address Bar?

The Address Bar is the area in Safari where you type website addresses or search the web. It is also where Safari shows the website you are currently visiting.

Beyond typing web addresses, the Address Bar also gives you quick access to browser controls such as refreshing a page, sharing a website, managing tabs, and viewing bookmarks.

Where this bar appears on the screen changes how Safari feels to use. Some people prefer having it lower because it is easier to reach with one hand, while others like the traditional location at the top because it feels more familiar.

Compact Position

The Compact position combines the Address Bar and tabs into a smaller area near the bottom of the screen. This layout is designed to maximize screen space so webpages have more room.

When using Compact mode, Safari keeps controls condensed into a smaller bar. This can make browsing feel cleaner and more modern, especially on smaller iPhones.

Some people like Compact mode because it reduces clutter and keeps everything close to their thumb. Others may find it takes a little time to get used to because the controls are more condensed.

Switch Locations

You can switch the Address Bar position directly from Safari without even opening the Settings app.

While viewing a webpage, tap the aA button in the Address Bar. From the menu that appears, you’ll see options to move the Address Bar to either the top or bottom depending on your current layout.

This makes it easy to experiment with different positions to see which one works best for you.

You can also change the setting permanently in the Settings app by going to Settings > Safari. Under the Tabs section, you’ll see the available Address Bar layouts.

Bottom Position

The Bottom position places the Address Bar at the bottom of the screen. This is the layout Apple made the default starting with newer versions of iOS.

The main advantage is reachability. Since the controls are lower on the screen, they are easier to access when using your iPhone with one hand. Swiping between tabs also feels more natural because your thumb is already near the bottom edge.

This layout works especially well on larger iPhones where reaching the top of the screen can be difficult.

For many people, once they get used to the bottom position, it becomes faster and more comfortable for everyday browsing.

Top Position

The Top position moves the Address Bar back to the traditional location at the top of Safari.

This is the layout longtime iPhone users are most familiar with. If you used Safari before Apple introduced the bottom Address Bar, this setup may feel more natural.

The top layout also keeps the webpage separate from the browser controls, which some people find visually easier to understand.

If the bottom Address Bar has been frustrating or confusing, switching back to the top can immediately make Safari feel more comfortable again.

Wrap Up

Safari gives you flexibility in how you browse the web on your iPhone. Whether you prefer the modern bottom layout, the traditional top layout, or the more condensed Compact option, you can switch between them whenever you want.

The best setup really comes down to personal preference and how you use your iPhone. If one layout does not feel comfortable, try another for a few days and see which works best for you.

Sometimes a small change like moving the Address Bar can make Safari feel much easier and more enjoyable to use.
