Introduction to the Files App

The Files app on the iPhone is designed to help you manage your documents, images, and folders from one central place. You can use it to find, organize, and access files stored on your device or in the cloud. In this article, we’ll look at how to use the Files app, step by step.

Exploring the Tabs: Recents, Browse, and Shared

When you open the Files app, you’ll see three tabs at the bottom of the screen: Recents, Browse, and Shared. The Recents tab shows you the files you’ve worked on or opened most recently. This makes it easy to return to something you were just working on without needing to remember where you saved it.

Browsing Your Files with the Browse Tab

The Browse tab gives you access to all of your storage locations, including iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, and any other connected services. This tab also includes a sidebar, which helps you quickly move between folders and file types. You can pull down slightly to reveal the folder creation icon and more options.

Using Favorites in the Sidebar

Inside the Browse tab, the sidebar shows a section called Favorites. This is where you can add folders you use often so they’re always easy to find. For example, if you’re working on a specific project or keeping medical records in one folder, you can mark that folder as a Favorite. It will stay pinned near the top of the sidebar.

Using the Search Feature

At the top of the screen, you’ll see a search field. This lets you find files by name or keyword. You can use it to search across iCloud Drive, your iPhone, or any other connected locations. This is helpful when you don’t remember exactly where a file is stored.

Getting File Information and Options

When you touch and hold a file, a menu appears. From here, you can rename, move, duplicate, or delete the file. If you select “Info,” you’ll see details like file size, date modified, and where it’s stored. This is especially useful for keeping track of your storage space.

Adjusting How Files Are Displayed

When viewing the contents of a folder, you can change how your files are sorted. You can sort by name, date, size, or file type. You can also switch between a list view and a grid view. These display options make it easier to find what you’re looking for.

Creating and Organizing with Folders

Folders help keep your files organized. To create a new folder, pull down slightly in the Browse view and tap the folder icon. You can move files into the folder by dragging and dropping, or by selecting “Move” from the file menu. This is a good way to keep similar files grouped together.

Accessing Other Locations and Shared Files

Besides iCloud Drive and On My iPhone, you may see other locations in the sidebar, such as shared folders or connected drives. The Shared tab at the bottom of the screen shows files and folders that others have shared with you. This helps you keep track of collaborative projects or files you’re working on with someone else.

Wrapping Up

The Files app is a helpful tool for organizing and finding your documents, whether they’re stored on your iPhone or in the cloud. With easy access through Recents, Favorites, and the Browse tab, you can manage your files in a way that works best for you.
