New Date and Time Picker
See how the new date and time picker works on the iPhone.
In iOS 14, Apple added a new date and time picker. We no longer have to swipe to select a date and time on the iPhone, we can now use a date and time picker. With the date, we just choose a date to a calendar; and with the time, we just type it in with a keypad. See how this all works in this video on the new date and time picker on the iPhone.
Video Transcript (video also has closed captions):
In this video, we’re going to take a look at the new date and time picker we have on the iPhone. This was primarily introduced with the Reminders app, so I’m going to show you in the Reminders app. But I believe that you’ll see this across more apps as time goes on. This was introduced with iOS 14. Let’s go to my iPhone.
Now, before I show you the new date and time picker, let’s see how it worked in the past. I’m going to open up my Contacts app first here. I tap on it, and now I’m looking at Johnny Appleseed here. I want to add a birthday for him. So I just go up to Edit here, and then when I swipe up, you’re going to see Add Birthday. This is the old way of adding a date and time. In this case, we’re just able to add a date. What I have to do is I have to swipe through the different months and days here, as well as the different years.
Well, now, since iOS 14, we have a new picker. It makes it a lot easier to select a date as well as a time. As I mentioned in the introduction, this was primarily introduced in the Reminders app. So we’re going to look at this in the Reminders app. I tap on it, and now let’s go and take a look at my shoes reminder. I want to set a reminder to get these new shoes for next week. So I need to select a date and a time. To do that, I just tap on it. And then from here, we go over to the ‘i’.
But before I do that, if we look down towards the bottom here, you’re going to see we have this calendar here. This is a shortcut to selecting a day. I tap on it. And now, all I have to do is set when I want this reminder to remind me. So if I go to next weekend, it’s going to set a reminder for the 28th. I can easily just set a reminder for tomorrow. If I want to create my own date and time, maybe I want to set it for next week Wednesday, then what I do is I go over to Date and Time. I can also access this by going over to the ‘i’ here, and then you’re going to see Date and Time. So we have two different ways to do that.
Let’s go with our Date here; I tap on the slider, and now we have a nice calendar here. We no longer have to scroll through the date. So I’m going to go next week Wednesday. What about the time? Well, let’s go over to Time here, I tap on the slider, and now all I need to do is just type in a time. So let’s set this for 3:00 PM. Once I have it all set, I tap on Done, and we can see we have a reminder for next week Wednesday at 3:00 PM.
If I want to change this, I can tap on it, and then I can tap on the calendar here again, and I can easily change it to another date. We can see that the date and time here are highlighted because I selected a date. I can also tap on this, and it brings me directly to my date and time.
So that’s the new date and time picker on the iPhone. This was primarily introduced with the Reminders app, but I believe you’re going to see this in future apps as time goes on. We no longer have to scroll through date and time to select a date and time. With the date, we just tap on a calendar; with the time, we just type it in with the keypad.
So that’s the new date and time picker on the iPhone.
