Optimize your iPad Storage

Introduction

Storage fills up over time — apps get larger, photos and videos accumulate, and files quietly take up space in the background.

Instead of guessing what to delete, your iPad gives you a clear breakdown of how your storage is being used along with recommendations to help you manage it.

View Storage Space

The first step is understanding how much storage you’re using.

To do this, go to the Settings app, then tap General, and select iPad Storage.

At the top of the screen, you’ll see a visual bar showing how your storage is being used. This includes categories like apps, photos, system data, and more.

This overview helps you quickly see what is taking up the most space.

Recommendations

Below the storage graph, you may see recommendations from Apple.

These are suggestions designed to help you free up space quickly. For example, your iPad might recommend reviewing large attachments or enabling certain features to reduce storage use.

These recommendations are helpful because they point out opportunities you might not notice on your own.

View Apps Taking up Storage

As you scroll down, you’ll see a list of all your apps, sorted by how much storage they are using.

This makes it easy to identify which apps are taking up the most space.

When you tap on an app, you’ll see more details, including how much space the app itself uses and how much space is taken up by its data.

This is especially useful for apps like Messages, Photos, or social media apps that can store a lot of content over time.

Delete Apps & Data

If you find an app you no longer use, you can remove it to free up space.

From the app’s storage screen, tap Delete App. This removes both the app and all of its data from your iPad.

This is one of the quickest ways to recover storage, especially if the app has accumulated a lot of data.

Offloading Apps

Sometimes you may not want to completely delete an app — especially if you plan to use it again later.

This is where Offloading Apps comes in.

When you offload an app, the app itself is removed, but its data is saved. This means that when you reinstall the app, everything is right where you left off.

You can offload apps individually or enable a setting that automatically offloads apps you haven’t used in a while.

This is a great option if you want to free up space without losing your information.

Wrap Up

Managing storage on your iPad doesn’t have to be complicated.

By going into Settings > General > iPad Storage, you can:

See how your storage is being used

Review Apple’s recommendations

Identify large apps and data

Delete apps you no longer need

Offload apps to save space without losing data

Taking a few minutes to review your storage can make your iPad run more smoothly and give you more room for the things that matter most.
