Tile Windows to View Apps in a Split View

In this video, we’re going to look at how we can tile Windows on a Mac, to view them in a split view. Basically, we can open up two windows side by side or in a split view, while the Mac is in full screen. Let’s see how we do this. Let’s go to my Mac. So I’m looking at my Mac here. And if we look, you’re going to see I have a few windows open, I have a couple of Safari windows open, as well as my calendar window open.

Now what I want to do is view a couple of these side by side, maybe I want to view my Safari window side by side. Well, one way of doing that is going to the window here and dragging the sides until we get them side by side. But there’s a lot of steps to that. Well, what we can do on the Mac is tile these when we tile them, what it does is it opens up the window in full screen. But then you’re also able to select another window and open that up in a split screen. Let’s go and do that. So you can see what I mean. I’m going to go to the Safari window here, I want this to open up on the left side. And then I want to have this Safari window open on the right side in a split screen, all I have to do is just go over to the green die here.

And when I do that, you’re going to see I don’t click on it, all I do is just hover over top of it. When I hover over top of it I have tile window to the left or tile to the right. If I toggle it to the left is going to put on the left side, which is what I want. If I toggle it to the right, it’s going to put it on the right side. So I’m going to go with the left here. And when I do, you can see that it moved it over to the left. But now what I need to do is I need to select the other window that I want to open up on the right, I want to open up my Safari window. So I just go and click on this window here. And now we can see both of those windows are open side by side, we do have a vertical bar here in the middle. And what I can do is drag this to the left or right to resize it. Let’s say I want it to open up a different window. Maybe I want that calendar window in here. Now I want it on the left, all I have to do is just go over to my Safari window, I hover over top of it. And I’m going to replace this tiled window. So I select it. And now I click on my calendar window, select it. And now we have my calendar window on the left and Safari on the right. Now in order to make this work, as you can see, you do need to have a window open. So you’re not going to be able to add a window in here to an application that does not have a window open.

So if I wanted to add a Pages document to this, I would need to open up that Pages document in a window. So then I can select it. Let’s go and replace my Safari window with the other Safari window. I go over to the top here we have our green dot. And now what I’m going to do is replace it with the tiled window. So I click on this. And I’m able to select from any of my open windows. So if I had that Pages window, open, I be able to select that window, I only have one other window open my Safari one. So that is why it is only showing one window here. But you would be able to see all of your windows that you have opening.

And you can select from any one of those to open up in your tiled view or split view. So I select this. And there it is. Now if I want to remove it from my tiled view or my split view, what I do is I go up to the top here, you go over to the green dot again. And then you’re going to see move window to desktop or make window full screen. So I could make this window full screen, or I can move it back to the desktop. So I’m going to move it back to the desktop. I can also just click on this green dot and it’ll move it to the desktop. So let’s go ahead and do that. And now we can see it is now on the desktop. But where is my other window? Where is my calendar? Well, that kept open in full screen. So if I go over to my calendar here, I click on it, we can see that it is full screen. So how do I remove this from OLED screen, we just go up to the top and we click on the green dot when I click on the green.it puts it back into a windowed view.

Again, the trick to making this work is not to click on the green dot. What you’ll want to do is just place your cursor over top of it and when you do, what you’re going to see is tile window. If you click on it, it will open up in full screen that’s not what you want to do. So that’s how you can easily tile your windows or open them up in Split view on the Mac. Basically, all you have to do is just hover your cursor over top of the green.in the upper left hand corner of the window And when you hover it there, don’t click on it. When you hover over top of that green dot, you’ll see a couple of options, you can toggle it to the left or tile to the right.

When you do that, it’ll move that window to the left or right depending on what you choose. And then what you can do is click on another window that you have already open. When you click on that other window, it’ll move it to the other side. So then both of those windows are in Split View, you can replace a window with another window when it is in this tiled or split view. Again, you just hover over that green dot and when you do, you’re going to have the option to replace it with another window or just move it back to a window view or open it up in full screen. So that’s how we can open up our windows in a tiled view or split view on the Mac.
