What’s New in Safari
Learn about the new Start page and PIP introduced in Safari with macOS Catalina.
In this lesson for What’s New in macOS Catalina, I look at what’s new in Safari, including the new start page for when you first opens browser window, and how you can move a video you are watching into picture-in-picture through Safari’s tab bar. You can do this by clicking and holding on the speaker icon in the tab bar while a video is playing.
Video Transcript (video also has closed captions):
Let’s take a look at what’s new with Safari in macOS Catalina. Let’s go to my Mac. I’m going to show you a couple of things with Safari. Let’s go ahead and open up Safari. I’m looking at a new web page. This is one of the things that Apple has changed. You’re going to see a lot more content here on your start pages. I have not used this browser that much. I don’t have a lot of history here. Right now, I have my favorites. What you may see as you use Safari more is other items in here. This could be your browsing history, your recently visited sites, bookmarks, your reading list, and iCloud tabs, which means that any websites you visited with your other iOS devices will show up on your Mac. They have, what I like to say, a more robust start page design.
What else is new? When you’re looking at a video, I’m going to go over to my website. I have this video. When I am playing this video, what I can do is I can open it up in Picture-in-Picture. Nothing new in macOS Catalina. If I click on the play button, you’re going to see we have the Picture-in-Picture button. What is new is I can do this from the tab bar.
Let’s say I’m back in another tab. I’m going to click on this tab. We can see that this tab has audio. It’s playing in the background. Let’s say I wanted to view that video if this was a video. All I have to do is click and hold on the speaker icon, and you’re going to see enter Picture-in-Picture. I select it, and now we can see my picture. I’m going to move it down towards the bottom. I can go back over to my favorites, and I can continue watching my video. Now, we can enter in Picture-in-Picture from the tab bar in addition to the video itself. That is what’s new with Safari on macOS Catalina. We have a new start page design. Then we also can enter Picture-in-Picture for any videos that we’re watching from the tab bar. Just click on the speaker icon or click and hold on the speaker icon, and then select Picture-in-Picture.
That’s what’s new with Safari in macOS Catalina.
