Applications in Full-screen Mode

Speaker: Now, when we open up an app, it opens up in a window by default, or we can also open up an app in full-screen mode. Let’s take a look at full-screen mode on the Mac. Let’s go to my Mac.

Opening in Full-screen mode: Let’s go and open up my calendar app. When I open this app, it opens up in a window here. Now let’s say I wanted to open this app in full-screen. I don’t want to have any distractions I’m just working on my events, so I don’t want to see any other applications. I don’t want to see the Desktop. I want to work on this in full-screen. To do that, all we have to do is click on the green dot. You’re going to see that we have two diagonal arrows over the green dot when you move or curse over top of it. I click on it, and now that app is in full-screen.

Menu Bar and Dock in Full-screen mode: You’re going to notice that we no longer have a menu bar, and we no longer have the Dock. To get our menu bar back, we have to move our cursor up, and we have our menu bar. Move it away, and it disappears again—the same thing with the Dock. I bring my cursor down; we have our Dock. Move my cursor away; it goes back.

Bringing an application back to windowed mode: Now, let’s say I wanted to get back to the Finder. Well, one way of doing that is bringing this back into a windowed mode. To do that, all I have to do is go up to the upper left-hand corner where our dots are, and now I click on the green dot again, and it brings us back to our window.

Switching to a new screen or Desktop while in full-screen mode. Also, what I can do is I can switch to a different screen. Well, let’s see what I mean. Let’s go back into full-screen mode. I click on it it’s taken up the entire screen. Now what I want to do is I want to go back to my Finder, but I do not want to put this back into windowed mode. All I need to do is have a trackpad here; all I need to do is swipe over to the right with three fingers. I swipe to the right; I’m back in my Finder, and I can see the Desktop. I want to go back to my calendar I swipe back over to the left with three fingers I’m back in the calendar. I can also use keyboard shortcuts to switch. If I hold down the control key and then click on the left arrow, because I want to go left, I’m back in the Finder. Now, when I go and click on the right arrow, we’re back in the calendar app.

Multiple applications and full-screen mode: We can open up multiple apps. I’m going to go back, and now let’s go and open up Safari. I’m going to go and open this up in full-screen mode. Now, I have two apps in full-screen mode. I want to go to my calendar app. I swipe over; there’s my calendar. I want to go back to Safari. I swipe back; there’s Safari. I want to go back to my Finder I swipe again, there’s my Finder. We can quickly swipe to get back to our different apps. Now there’s another way of accessing these windows and rearranging them, and that is when we go to mission control. If you open up an app and full-screen mode right now, all you have to do is swipe to get to the different app. You can also again use your control and the arrow keys. To go back to our windowed mode again, we go up, click on the green button, or back on our windowed mode. Now when I swipe over to the left, I have my calendar swipe back; I’m in Safari.
