Today I want to share with you one of my favorite tips for using a Mac: keyboard navigation. This feature allows you to control your Mac using just your keyboard, making your experience more efficient and enjoyable. Let’s dive in!

What is Keyboard Navigation?

Keyboard navigation is a feature that lets you move through different controls on your Mac using the keyboard. When you press the Tab key, you’ll notice a small outline around the current focus. Each time you press Tab, the focus shifts to the next item. This way, you can navigate through different options without using your mouse or trackpad.

Setting Up Keyboard Navigation

Enabling keyboard navigation on your Mac is simple. Here’s how you do it:

1. Open System Settings: Click on the Apple menu in the top-left corner and select “System Settings” (or “System Preferences” if you’re using an older Mac).
2. Go to Keyboard Settings: Scroll to the bottom and click on “Keyboard.”
3. Enable Keyboard Navigation: You’ll see an option for keyboard navigation. Just tap the little slider to turn it on.

Once enabled, you can navigate through different controls by pressing the Tab key. If you turn the slider off, the focus won’t change as you press Tab.

Using Keyboard Navigation

Now that you’ve enabled keyboard navigation, let’s see how it works:

• Tab Key: Press the Tab key to move the focus to the next item.
• Shift + Tab: Press Shift and Tab together to move the focus backward.
• Spacebar: When an item is highlighted, press the Spacebar to activate it.

For example, if you want to open AirDrop, press the Tab key until AirDrop is highlighted. Then, press the Spacebar to open it.

Advanced Tips

Here are a few additional tips to make your keyboard navigation even more efficient:

• Command + Period: If you want to cancel an action, press Command and Period (.) together. This will quickly cancel the current task.
• Escape Key: You can also use the Escape key to close windows or cancel actions.
• Return Key: When saving a document, if the Save button is highlighted (usually in orange or blue), you can press Return to save it without clicking the button.

Practical Example

Let’s say you’re working in Pages and want to save a document:

1. Press Command + S to open the save dialog.
2. Type in the document name.
3. Press Return to save it.

If you decide not to save the document, you can press Command + Period or the Escape key to cancel.
