Add Documents to a Finder Window Toolbar

In this video, I will show you how you can add a document to a Finder window toolbar and why you may want to add a document to your Finder window toolbars on your Mac. Let’s go to my Mac.

So I have a document created in Pixelmator Pro that is a template for all of my feature images. I need to access this document quite a bit. Pixelmator Pro is like Photoshop. So whenever I create a new feature image for my website, I need to open up that template document. This document is stored in iCloud, so then I can access it from my other devices. Let’s go and open up a new Finder window, and when we go to iCloud Drive here, under Pixelmator, you’re going to see I have my feature image template. Every time I need to update or create a new feature image, I need to open up this document. I double-click on it to open it up, and we can see we have my feature image.

Now the problem with this is I need to go to iCloud every time and then go over to my feature image template and Pixelmator. So every time that I want to open it up, I need to open up multiple folders. I need to dig down into a folder.

Now one way of resolving this is by adding it to your Dock. You just drag this down to the right side of your Dock, and now you have easy access to it. But let’s say you want to keep your Dock clean or your Dock is hidden all the time. You just do not want to have it in the Dock.

Well, another solution is to store it in your Finder window toolbar. When you add it to your Finder Window toolbar, you’re going to have access to it from within any window, any Finder window.

So how do we add a document to our Finder window toolbar? All we have to do is just control-click on it, hold down the control key, and click, and then we go to Customize Toolbar. When I select this, I have a number of different tools that I can add to my Toolbar. But in addition to adding tools, we can also add documents to this. Now you’re going to see that my document or my customization of the Toolbar is covering up what I need to add to it. So now what I need to do is any to open up a second Finder window. So I go up to File here. We go over to the new Finder window. I go over to iCloud Drive. We go over to Pixelmator. We have my feature image, and now all I need to do is drag this up here. You’re going to see we have a green +, and when I let go, we have my feature image added to that window. Now I close this, I close my customization options, and now every time I want to open up that document, I just click on this, and it opens up that document.

If I quit out of Pixelmator Pro, I’m going to delete this; this was just another document that I had in there, so I had my feature image template. Let’s go and close this window. Now, I want to open up that document. I have a new Finder window in here. All I need to do is just click on the feature image template, and it opens up Pixelmator Pro, and then it goes to my feature image template, and I can access this from within any Finder window. Let’s go and open up a few more Finder windows. You’re going to see that I have it on each one of those windows. I can click on any one of these to open it up.

So that’s how we can add a document to our Finder window toolbar and why we may want to add a document. It gives us easy access to a document that we need to open up on a regular basis. We can open it up from any Finder window. To add a document, all you have to do is just customize a toolbar, control-click on the Toolbar, and then drag the document that you want into the Toolbar. You may have to open up a second window to get to that document. Once you do that, if you need to open up that document, just click on that document in a Finder window toolbar; it doesn’t matter which Finder window toolbar; any Finder window toolbar will show that document. Just click on it, and it’ll open it up.
