Play Startup Sound

In this video, we’re going to take a look at how he can turn on and off the chime sound that our Mac makes when it starts up. This was introduced with macOS Big Sur. Let’s go to my Mac.

Now you may be familiar with the chime sound that a Mac makes when it starts up if you’ve been using a Mac for a while. I’ll play that sound now.

So that’s the chime sound that a Mac makes when it starts up, and in previous versions of macOS, this was on by default, or you couldn’t even actually turn it off. It was always on. And then they turned it off to where you couldn’t turn it on. But now, with macOS Big Sur, they’ve introduced the option to where we can turn it on and off ourselves.

So how do we do that? Well, we need to go to our System Preferences. So I go up to my Apple menu, and then I go over to System Preferences. From here, we need to make sure that we go to our Sound preferences. Under Sound, we go to our Sound Effects tab. In the Sound effects tab, you’re going to see a new option with macOS Big Sur, where we can Play Sound on Startup.

If we want to play that chime sound when our Mac starts up, we just select this, and next time our Mac starts up, we’re going to hear that classic Mac sound.

If you want to turn that sound off, maybe you restart your Mac in a quiet environment, all you have to do is just de-select this, and it will no longer make that chime when it starts up.

So if you like that classic Mac sound when it starts up, just go over to your System Preferences, and under the Sound preferences, under Sound Effects, you can make sure that it plays by just selecting Play Sound on Startup.

So that’s how we can make sure that that classic Mac chime sound is played when our Mac starts up.
