Copy or Translate Text in a Photo
Learn how to select text within a Photo to copy or Translate it in Photos on the Mac.
Did you know you could copy text that is in a photo with the Photos app on the Mac? You can also select that text and translate it to a different language! This was introduced with macOS Monterey. Learn how to select txt and translate text with Live Photos in this video for Photos on the Mac.
Video TranscriptionIn this video, we’re going to look at how we can select text within a photo. Using live text. When we select tax we’re able to do is copy that text, or even translate it. Let’s see how we do this. Let’s go to my Mac.
0:18
So I’m looking at my photos app here. And let’s take a look at this photo here. This is from Durango and Silverton. So I just double click on it, and it opens it up. Now with the live tax, what we’re able to do is copy this text. Well, all I have to do is just move my cursor overtop of the text. And you’re going to see that the cursor is changing, I’m going to try to zoom in here. And when I do, you’re going to see that that cursor changes there. This means that the Photos app is recognizing that as text. So now, when that cursor is that Ibeam, what I’m able to do is just select this text, so I’m going to select it here, it’s the IBM so I just go and select it, and you’re going to see that it turns a slight blue. This means that that text is selected. So now what I’m able to do is copy that text. So I’m going to go Command C to copy here. And now when I go into Safari here, all I have to do is just go up to my address bar here and I paste and it pastes that text in there. Now it’s not perfect, you’re going to see that it actually put Durango and Cilento, not silver 10. So what I’d have to do is I’d have to go and correct this. But when you look back at that photo, you’re going to see that it is a little bit of a different font, and it’s getting smaller there. So it did a pretty good job. Let’s take a look at this with a recipe like maybe I took a PDF or took a picture of a recipe, I want to copy that recipe. So now I’m going to go back over here, and I swipe up.

I have somewhere in here, a recipe for hot cocoa. There it is. So I just double click on it. And now what I’d like to do is copy this. So now all I have to do is just move my cursor over top of the text again, you’re going to see that it’s a pointer right now. But watch what happens when I move it over that text. I move it over the text, it turns into the IBM here. So now what I’m able to do is go and select this text when it’s an I beam. And I can select all of that text I copied. And now I’m able to paste this into a note. So let’s go ahead and paste this into a note. I’m going to go the new note. And there’s my recipe.

What about translations, we can also use this to translate text. Let’s go back over to my photos app here.

I took a picture of some microphones that I purchased. I’m going to double click on it. And we can see that it has some Chinese text in here. I would like to translate this. Well, all I have to do is just move my cursor overtop of it again, and you’re going to see it turns into an I beam there, which means I can select that text. And now instead of copying it, what I’m going to do is I’m going to hold down the Ctrl key. And when I do that, and click, we have translate. So now I just select this.

And we can see that it’s telling me that this battery can work for up to seven hours when it’s fully charged. So that is what this text says. So that’s how we can use live text in the Photos app. Basically, what we do is we just move our cursor over top of the text is going to turn into an IB when it turns into that Ibeam what we’re able to do is select that text. Once we select it, we can copy it and paste it into another application, paste it into safaris address bar, but we can also translate it, all we have to do is just select it and then Ctrl Click on it. And then what you’re able to do is translate it. So that’s how we use live text in the Photos app to translate text as well as copy text from different photos on the Mac.
