Search your Photos and Videos
Learn how the Photos app categorizes your photos with keywords to help you search all your photos and videos.
Did you know the Photos app applies keywords to your photos and videos automatically? And then you can search using these keywords? As an example, you may have a photo of a train or train tracks, the photos app will see this, and apply the keywords ‘train’ and ‘train track’ automatically. Then when you search for ‘train’ or ‘train track’, those photos will show in your results. See how the Photos app can help you find your photos and videos in this video for the Photos app on the Mac.
Video Transcript (video also has closed captions):
In this video, we’re going to look at how we can search our photos and videos on the Mac. This includes searching them by date or by category, or even album name. Let’s see how we search in the Photos app on the Mac. Let’s go to my Mac.
Now, if we go to the upper right-hand corner and the toolbar, we’re going to see Search. This is where we type in our search. Now when we type in a search, the Photos app will give us results based on what you are searching for. This could be anything from an album name to a date, but it can also include any keywords, keywords that Apple applies. Apple will take a look at your photos. It does this all locally; your computer will look at your photos, and then based on what it sees in that photo, it’ll categorize it.
So let’s go and search for a date. First, I just go in here and search, and let’s go with March. And now we can see we have 60 photos from March. And if I want to look at a memory, I can see my memory from March 14.
Let’s go with a year. I start typing in a year. Let’s go with 201, and we can see all of my photos by year.
Let’s take a look at categories. If we look, you’re going to see I have a picture of a rollercoaster here. I did not tag this as a roller coaster but watch what happens when I start typing rollercoaster in here. The Photos app shows me that photo because it’s analyzing all of your photos and videos and looking for specific keywords. Again, it does this locally on your computer. I’m going to click on the X again to close my search. This time I’m going to search for cat. Type in here cat, and we can see we have a couple of photos of cats, but also what we have here is cat like animal. Again, I did not tag these. I did not create these keywords in here.
We’re going to do one more here, train. When I start typing train, you’re going to see I have tracks. I have a track rail. And again, it’s showing me all these different results. So I want to see all of the track rail photos. I click on this, and here are all my photos with track rail. I want to find a train. I type in here train.
We can do more than one search in there. Now I’m searching for a track rail and a train, and it’s going to give me the results for that, track rail and train.
So that’s how we search our photos and videos in the Photos app on the Mac. All we have to do is just go up to the upper right-hand corner. You’re going to see the search bar, start typing. Your searches could be a year. It could be an album name. It could be a person’s name. It could be a category or a keyword that you’ve added. It could be one that Apple added. Just start typing, and you’re going to immediately see the number of results that you have. You can enter more than one search term.
So that’s how we search our photos and videos in the Photos app on the Mac.
