Organizing Photos and Videos in Albums
Learn how to keep your photos and videos organized in Albums in the Photos app on the Mac.
You can easily keep your photos and videos organized by albums in the Photos App. Just select the photos and videos you’d like in an album and then create the album. Any media you have selected will be placed in that new album. When you place any photos or videos in an album, they are not removed from the library. See how to keep your photos and video organized by albums in this video for Photos on the Mac.
Video Transcript (video also has closed captions):
In this video, we’re going to take a look at albums in the Photos app on the Mac. Let’s go to my Mac.
So I’m in my Photos app, and if we go to the sidebar, you’re going to see I have Albums. The albums that we’re going to look at in this video are My Albums. These are albums that I create. I manually placed my photos and videos in an album that I create.
We can see that I have a number of different albums here. When I click on one, I can see all the photos and videos in that album. I can rearrange these just by clicking and dragging, and I can place them where I want.
I can also duplicate an album, rename it and delete it. To do that I control click on it, hold down the control key, and you’re going to see I have a number of different options. I can duplicate it, rename it and delete it. I can also delete and duplicate an album from the menu bar. I go up to Image in the menu bar, and then you’re going to see at the bottom Duplicate and Delete.
Now, what about creating an album? Well, we have a couple of different ways to do that. We can create a blank album and then add our photos and videos to that album. Or if we have anything selected, we can also create an album with the photos and videos that we have selected.
Let’s first look at how we create a blank album. I’m going to go back over to my Library. Now from here, what we need to do is make sure that we do not have anything selected. You’re going to see I have these two photos here selected. If I keep these selected and I create an album, what it will do is it’ll place those two photos in that album. That’s not what I want to do. I want to create a blank album. What I do is I just swipe up and then I click outside of any photo or video. It’s going to de-select anything that I have selected.
Now, what I’m able to do is create a blank album. To do that, we can go over to My Albums here, and then we click on the plus. When we click on the plus, we have a menu. I select Album, select it, and we have our untitled album. Let’s just call this Holland. We can see we have no items in it. I can also create a blank album by going up under File in the menu bar, and then you’re going to see New Album.
Now that I have my album created, all I have to do is just drag any photos and videos to that album. So let’s go up here and I’m going to select a couple of these. I just drag these over to Holland here. You’re going to see I have a green plus with two, which means it’s going to add those two photos that I have selected to this album. And now when I click on this, we have those two photos there.
When I add a photo or video to an album, it does not remove it from the library. You’re going to see that those two photos are still in my library. All it did was also add them to my album. I want to add a couple more. I just select what I want to add and drag it to that album.
I can also control click on a photo. I’m going to go to this photo here. I hold down the control key and I click, and then you’re going to see Add To, and I select Holland. There’s a shortcut. I can also just go to Add To Holland. What this is going to do is show you the last album that you created or the last time that you added any photos too. So now I select this and it just added that to Holland here. And then if you want to use the menu bar, you can do that too. I select this, I go up under Image and then I can add it to an album or I can just add it to my last album, which is Holland.
Once we have an album, I select it and I can remove any one of these photos in here. I just select it and hit the delete key. It removes it from that album. It does not remove it from the library. It only removes it from the album.
Now I mentioned that we can also create an album by selecting our photos and videos first. Let’s go back over to Library. I’m going to go with a few of these photos here. These are Pigeon Forge. I select what I want to add, and then what I do is I go over to my albums here and being that I have photos selected, when I click on the plus and go to album, it’s going to add those photos to it automatically. I’m naming it here. And if we look, we have my photos.
So I can select my photos, and then when I create an album, any photos that I have selected will be in that album. I can also do that by going over to my library and then control clicking on it. So let’s go with a few of these here. If I hold down the control key and click, I want to create an album, I go to Add To and then we go up to New Album. When I select this, it creates a new album and it puts those photos in there. So this is ziplining here, and now I can see those three photos there. And of course, we can also do this through the menu bar. I select what I want to add. I go up under File. And then we go to New Album With One Selection. In this case, I just have one photo selected.
Now, once I create an album, it doesn’t matter how I create it, but once I create the album, I can add and remove any photos or videos to those albums. So if I wanted to add this to ziplining and I just click and drag and add it to my ziplining, even though I created it by selecting my photos and videos first. I want to remove it. I go over to ziplining. This photo is not anything of ziplining. I select it. I deleted it. It removes it from that album, but it does not remove it from the Library. You’re going to see it as still here in my library.
So that’s how we work with our albums in the Photos app on the Mac. With our albums, we’re able to place our photos and videos in an album. We can create a blank album first and then add our photos and videos, or we can select our photos and videos and then create an album from our selection. Once we create an album, we can add and remove photos at will. If we remove a photo from an album, it does not remove it from the library. It only removes it from the album. We can move our albums around by just clicking and dragging. If we control click on an album, we can duplicate it as well as deleted and rename it.
So that’s how we work with our albums in the Photos app on the Mac.
