Reducing and Removing Red-Eye
Learn how to reduce Red Eye in a Photo with Photos on the Mac.
When you use a flash and you take a photo of someone, you may get red eye. This is the light of the flash reflecting off the blood vessels on the back of an eye. We can remove or reduce that red eye in the Photos app through the red eye adjustment. See how to reduce red eye in a photo in this video for Photos on the Mac.
Video Transcript (video also has closed captions):
In this video, we’re going to look at how we can reduce red eye in a photo in the Photos app on the Mac. Let’s go to my Mac.
Now, if we look at this photo here, you’re going to see that Beth has red eyes. Basically what’s happening with the red eye is when you take a photo with the flash, that light is being reflected off of the blood vessels in the back of someone’s eye. That’s how we get red eye.
So how do we remove red eye, once we have it in a photo? Well we first have to edit the photo, and then we go to our adjustments, there’s a red eye tool that we can use to reduce red eye. So now I go to Edit in the upper right hand corner, and then we go over to Adjust.
From here, you’re going to see a tool that’s called Red Eye. This works very similar to our Retouch tool. Basically what we do is we have a brush and we can resize that brush. And then we just click on the eye and it’ll reduce that red eye, much like Retouch. What I like to do is make this a little bit smaller. It makes it easy to place it over top of the eye. And then all we have to do is just click and now she no longer has red eye in that eye. In some cases, it may get rid of red eye on both eyes. In this case, it didn’t. So now I have to go over to the other eye. I click, it didn’t do anything. So, and I go up to the top here, get in the center of the eye click again. Didn’t do anything. We’re going to do it again. There we go. And now we can see it got rid of the right eye. So you may have to click a few times to find that right spot.
What you may want to do is zoom in much like Retouch. If I were to zoom into this photo here and then make my brush size a little bit smaller, I would have been able to click precisely on that red dot. What you need to do is you need to click where it is red. So if I go up under Edit here, undo. We’re going to make my brush size here a little bit smaller. I want to click on the red. So I just move over to the right slightly. And now we can see it got rid of the red eyes. So you may want to zoom in before you click.
So that’s how we get rid of red eye or reduce red eye in the Photos app on the Mac. The first thing we need to do is edit our photo and then we make sure that we’re looking at our adjustments. There’s going to be a red eye tool. What I would recommend doing is zooming in a little bit to the photo and then make them the brush size a little bit on the smaller side, much like what we do with retouch, what you want to do is click on the red in the eye. You may have to do this a few times as you click, you’re going to see the Photos app will remove any red eye. In some cases, it’ll reduce it from both eyes and other cases, you may have to do this a few times.
So that’s how we reduce red eye and the Photos app on the Mac.
