Add Titles and Captions
Learn how to add titles and captions to your photos and videos in the Photos app on the Mac.
With the Photos app on the Mac, you can add titles and captions to your photos and videos. When you add titles, you can view the titles below each thumbnail, while captions sync with your iPad and iPhone. See how to add titles and captions to your photos and videos in the Photos app on the Mac.
Video Transcript (video also has closed captions):
In this video, we’re going to look at how we work with titles and captions in our Photos app on the Mac. Let’s go to my Mac.
Now with the Photos app, what we’re able to do is add titles and captions to each individual photo and video. So how do we do that? Well, the first thing we need to do is we need to select what photo we want to add a title or caption to. So I have this photo here selected. This is about ziplining. I want to add a title to it. I want to add a caption to it. Well, in order to do that, we have to view our metadata to view our metadata. We go up to the i in the. Menu bar. I select this. We have a new window that opens up and I can see all of the metadata for that photo. This includes what camera was taken with, what the size is, what the type of file it is. But also you’re going to see I have a title and I can add a caption.
Now what’s the difference between a title and a caption? Well, the title will show in the Photos app. I can actually have it show below each thumbnail here. A caption is going to sync with all of my different devices. So captions will show up on my iPad, my iPhone, while a title will just show up on the Mac app, but I can have it show beneath each thumbnail. So they each have their different advantages.
So let’s go and add a title and see how I can show it below a photo. To do that, I just go to Add a Title. I click in here and then I type in ziplining. So now I’ve added that title. I’m going to close this, and now this photo here has the title to it.
How do I view that title? Well, the first thing we need to do is show our photos as a full aspect ratio. So I click on this icon here and now you’re going to see the title below each photo. And we can see that this one says ziplining. Now, if you do not see this, what you may need to do is go up under View, and then go to metadata, and make sure that you have Titles selected. If you do not want to see these titles below each thumbnail, you just de-select this, and now we can see there are no longer there. I’m going to select it again. I go back up under View, we go over to our Metadata, and then I select Titles. So that is what a title is.
Now let’s take a look at a caption. I’m going to view our metadata on this. I actually don’t have to open up this photo. I have it selected. I go up to my metadata here. My window opens up. We can see what the title is, but also what I’m able to do now is Add a Caption. Now with the caption, when I type this in here, what it will do is it will sync with my iPad, my iPhone. So now this caption will show on my iPad. This caption will show on my iPhone in the Photos app. All you have to do is just swipe up on the photo and you’re going to be able to see that caption. So I would find this photo on my iPhone, this photo on my iPad, I swipe up and then I’d be able to see that caption. This also means that it’d be able to search for that photo by using the caption.
So that’s how we add titles and captions to our photos and videos in the Photos app on the Mac. With titles, what we’re able to do is view the title below each photo. We do have to view our photo or video in full aspect ratio. With captions, it’s going to sync that caption across all of our different devices. To add a title or a caption to a photo or a video, you select it, and then you have to view the metadata. Click on the i in the toolbar. A window will open up, and then from there, you’re able to add and edit your titles and captions.
So that’s how we work with our titles and captions and the Photos on the Mac.
