Change Field Properties in a Form
Learn how to change field properties including hiding and masking fields, adding color to field titles and values, and making fields required in Tap Forms 5 on the Mac.
In tap Forms 5, you can set field properties. These properties include setting if a field is visible in the default layout, if the value in the field is masked, what the color of the field title is as well as the color of the field value, if you want the field to autocomplete as values are entered, and if you want a default value in the field. See how to set field properties for fields in a Tap Forms 5 form on the Mac.

In this video, we’re going to look at our different field properties we have available to us in Tap Forms 5. Field properties include if we want to hide the field, if we want to mask it if we want to have a value entered in there automatically. Let’s take a look at our field properties. We have available to us in Tap Forms 5 on the Mac. Let’s go to my Mac.
Now, the first thing we need to do is we need to select what form we’re going to modify. So I have my Grocery List here selected. Now we need to make sure that we are looking at our fields. Now, if you do not see the sidebar on the right, what you want to do is click on Form here until it’s blue. When I click on this, it hides my editing options. I click on it again, it turns blue, and then we go over to Fields. From here, we need to select the field we want to modify. I’m going to stick with my Grocery Store here.
So what different options do we have for properties for Grocery Store? All we have to do is just swipe up, and you’re going to see; we have a number of different options. I can change the color of the title. I can change the color of the value. So let’s go ahead and change my title color. We’re going to make this blue, and now we can see that it is blue. Let’s make my value orange. I go over here to Value Color, and then we select orange. And now we can see it as orange.
What else do we have? I can hide the field. When I hide the field, it is no longer going to show in my Default Layout. Now, what you may want to do is hide these Date Created and Date Modified fields. This is what I will usually do. I want to keep those fields in my database, but I no longer want to see them. I rarely need them. It’s more for when I want to see when they are modified. So now what I do is I select these fields here, and I can select more than one; I hold down the shift key, select all the fields. And then what I do is I go over here to Hide Field. It’s going to hide all three of those fields. Now we can see they are no longer there. I still have those fields. If I enter a new record, they’re still going to enter values in there, but I am no longer going to see them in my Default Layout.
What other options? Well, let’s go back over to Grocery Store. I can also use auto-complete. So this is going to complete based on values that are previously in there. So if I go and enter another grocery store, and then I want to enter that same grocery store in another record, when this is turned on, it’ll auto-complete it for me.
I can make this a required field. Tap Forms 5 Will not save that record until you have a value in there.
And then I can also mask the field. When I mask it, it hides the field. So how do I show it again? I just go and select the checkbox here, and we can see that we have my value. To hide it again, I just de-select it, and now it is hidden again.
I can show the title in the list view. I’ll talk a little bit more about the list view in another lesson, but if we look over to the left here, you will see I have a list view. If I want to show the title, let’s select my Item here because we have my items shown here. I want to show the title. I just select Show Title on List View, and we can see the title there. I’m going to de-select it again.
We can display it as a bar code. We can capitalize our values.
I can set a default value. I do most of my grocery store shopping at Meijer. So what I want to do when I add a new record is have Meijer entered in my grocery store automatically. So I select Grocery Store because this is a field that I want to work on. And then I go to Default Value. I enter in here Meijer. And now, when I create a new record, it’s going to add Meijer in there automatically. So let’s go and add a new item. Let’s add cheese. I go up to the plus here; I type in cheese. We can see we have cheese, and it automatically entered Meijer in there. Now, if I want to change this, I can go and select this and change it, but it’s just going to pre-populate it with Meijer because that’s what I have here as a default value.
And then, I also have picklist, checkbox, radio columns, and label position. A picklist is where we can choose the value from a picklist. I talked about that in another lesson; if we select checkbox or radio comms for our pick lists, I can see how many columns there are. And then, I can also set the label position. Right now, to set, to be beyond the right. But when I go and select a second set at two left or above, label position is more for when you’re working in your layouts, which I’ll talk about in another lesson.
So that’s how it changed the properties of our fields and Tap Forms 5. The properties include making a field required; we can have a default value in their field, we can mask that field, we can hide our fields, we can even change the color of the title and the value of the field. The first thing we need to do is we need to select our form, and then we need to edit our fields, select a field we want to edit, and then when you swipe up or scroll up, you’re going to see all the different properties that are available to you.
So that’s how we set the properties of our different fields in Tap Forms 5.
