16 Tips for the Reminders app on the iPhone
Assign Reminders
Learn how to assign a reminder to someone you are sharing a list with in the Reminders app on the iPhone.
In iOS 14, Apple introduced the option to assign reminders in the Reminders app on the iPhone. We can assign a reminder to anyone we are sharing a Reminder’s list with. Also, any reminders that are assigned to you will show up in your Assigned smart list. See how to assign reminders in this video for the Reminders app on the iPhone.
Video Transcript (video also has closed captions):
In this video, we’re going to look at how we can now assign reminders and the Reminders app. We can assign a reminder to anyone that we are sharing a Reminders list with. This was introduced in iOS 14. Let’s see how this works. Let’s go to my iPhone.
The first thing we need to do is we need to open up Reminders. Now in order to assign a reminder to someone, the first thing you’ll need to do is make sure that that list that you want to put that reminder in is a shared list. You can only assign reminders to people that you are sharing a list with.
How do we share a list? Well, let’s go over to Family here. To share this, what I would do is I would tap on it, and then I go up to the More button here, and you’re going to see Share List. I tap on this, and then from here, I invite who I want to share this list with. They are going to get an invitation, and once they accept that invitation, you are now sharing a list. This means that if you put a reminder in that list, they will also see that reminder. If they go and complete a reminder, That reminder will be completed on your list as well. If they go and add a reminder, that reminder will be in your Reminders list as well. Your sharing a list; everything you do with that list is being shared.
Since iOS 14, we can assign a reminder to anyone that we are sharing a list with. So how do we do that? Well, let’s first close this, and I’m going to go back over to Lists. So I have here a shared list. This is being shared with Troy Wassink. Being that this has shared, I can create a reminder in this list here and assign it to Troy. To do that, we just tap on it to open it up; we just create a standard reminder. I go down to the bottom here, tap on New Reminder, and start typing in what the reminder is. So let’s say I just needed him to order some audio cables. So I type in here ‘order audio cables.’
And now what I want to do is I want to assign this to him. We have a couple of different ways to do that. I can go above the keyboard here to this little tray here, and when I tap on this, I’ll be able to assign it to anyone I’m sharing my list with. Another way is to go up to the ‘i’ here, and when you go up to the ‘i’, you can see all of the details about that reminder, including an option to assign the reminder. I tap on this, and I’m able to assign it to anyone I share this list with. To assign it to Troy, I tap on it, and now we can see that this reminder is assigned to Troy. I’m going to tap on done. We can see that it has a TW there, which means that it’s assigned to Troy. This reminder will show up; I’m going to go back over to lists here; in your smart list, you have ‘Assigned.’ This reminder will show up in his Assigned smart list.
Let’s take another look at this. I’m going to go back to Errands, and let’s take a look at pick up package. I’m just going to assign this to myself. So I tap on the ‘i’, and then I go to Assign Reminder. I swipe up, and let’s go to me here. And now I tap on done. We’re going to go back over to Lists. And if we look, we can see we have one assigned reminder; this reminder is assigned to me. I need to pick up the package.
So that’s how we can now assign reminders in the Reminders app. The first thing we need to do is we need to share that list to who we want to assign a reminder to. Once we share that list, we can assign it to anyone that we share that list with when we create a reminder. When you assign a reminder, it’ll show up in their Assigned smart list.
So that’s how you can assign reminders and the Reminders app on the iPhone.
