Video Transcript (video also has closed captions):
In this video, we’re going to take a look at the maps view we have available to us in Tap Forms 5. Let’s go to my Mac.
So I’m looking at My Albums here. This is where I’m keeping track of all of my different albums that I’ve purchased. Well, one of the fields I have in here is location. When I scroll up here, you’re going to see I have Purchase Location. Now this is a location type field. I added this field and I made it a field type of location. When you have a field type of location, what you’re able to do is view that location on a map. Also, what you’re able to do is zoom in on an area of the map and see all of the records that are related to that area. In my case here, I could zoom into Holland, Michigan, which is where I purchased my albums. And I can see all the different locations where I purchased my albums. Now again, you do need to have a location type field. If you want to learn more about field types, take a look at my field types video.
So I have here this purchase location. Let’s go and add a location to this, to do that I just click on this. We have a new window that opens up, and from here I type in an address. Now it doesn’t really work well with points of interest. You’re going to see, we do have Points Of Interest here, but I’m not having a lot of luck with typing points of interest in here. In other words, I can’t say I purchased it at Target Holland. It’s not going to find the Target store here in Holland, but what it does do really well is addresses. So I can type in the address of where I purchased it. And then it’ll map it out.
So let’s go and type an address in here. Let’s say I bought this downtown Holland, the record stores, 85 East Eighth Street. So I just type in here 85 East Eighth. I’m going to type in here Holland Mi. And when I hit the tab key, it’s going to find that location. So now all I need to do is just click on Save, and it’s going to add that location there. So it works really well when you know the address. Let’s go and do that again.
We’re going to go to Natural High from Commodores. Let’s go and type in a purchase location. We’re going to use the same location. So I just go 85 East Eight Street. Holland, Mi. And I hit the tab key. It takes me to that address. And then I click on Save.
Now, when I click on Save, what it’s going to do is enter in the latitude and longitude of that location. That’s basically how this works. So now I click on Save and we can see we have it in there. So now I have some location data in here.
How does this maps view work? Well, we just need to go up to the top here in our tool bar and you’re going to see we have a Maps view. When I click on this, it’ll show me a maps view, but there’s one other thing we need to do. I did this earlier, we need to tell Tap Forms 5 which field contains our location data. How do we do that? We go over to the upper left hand corner of this map view, and you’re going to see Arrange By, and my case here, I have Arranged By Purchase Location. That is the name of my field that has a location data. Purchase Location. So what you want to do is select which field has your location data. Once you do that, all of your data will be mapped out in this map. So I have my purchase location selected here, and let’s take a look at this map.
So what am I looking at here? Well, these dots represent different locations from my data, and my case, different locations that I purchased my albums. If we go over to the right, we have this column view. This also lists all of the different albums that I’ve purchased from these locations, much like our calendar view on our multi column view. When I click on any one of these, let’s go to the Commodores here, I click on it, I can see the detail down below here. I can scroll up and down to view more detail.
Now I mentioned earlier that I can also view all the records from a specific location. You’re going to see I have some red dots here. These are other locations where I’ve purchased my albums. So what I want to do is I want to view all of the albums that I purchased in this map view. To do that, you go down to the lower right-hand corner. You’re going to see Filter Records By Area. When I select this, it’s going to filter all my records by area. So now I can see all of the albums that are viewed in this area here. If I were to zoom in, I have a track pad, so I’m going to pinch to zoom in. You can also just go to the plus and minus here, let’s zoom in a little bit further here. Now you’re going to see, I only have four albums here because I zoomed in and these other two different locations where I purchased them. When I zoom out, we have this location here, which means now I have five albums. I have my locations on the right, which include four albums. And then I have my location on the left, which has the one album I zoom out a little bit further. And now it’s adding more albums there.
If you want to hide this column, you can click on the arrow to hide it. If you want to show the column again, which I recommend, you click on the arrow to show it again.
So that’s our map view we have available to us in Tap Forms 5. We first have to have a field where the field type of location. Once we have that field type, you go and tell Tap Forms 5, when we are in our map view, which field that is. When you do that, you’re able to see all of the locations plotted out in a map. You can filter your records by area, and then you can also select on any one of the records in the column view and view the details below the map.
So that’s our map view we have available to us in Tap Forms 5.
