Create a Shortcut to Pause Audio from your iPhone when Connecting to a Car
Learn how to create a Shortcut to automatically pause your audio from your iPhone when it connects to your car with this Shortcut.
If you connect your iPhone to your car with CarPlay or by using bluetooth, you probably noticed that as soon as you connect to your car, your audio will start playing. What do you do if you do not want it to do this? You can create an automated Shortcut that will pause any audio from your iPhone when it connects to your car. It just a few simple steps and is a great step to learning how to automate Shortcuts. Learn how in this video for Shortcuts.
Video TranscriptionIn this video, we’re going to look at how we can create a shortcut that will automatically pause any music. When our iPhone connects up to our car, we can do this through a personal automation. Let’s see what I mean. Let’s go to my iPhone. Now by default, when your iPhone connects up to your car, let’s say you have Bluetooth in your car, or you’re using CarPlay, what will happen is, the iPhone will automatically start playing any music, once it connects up to the car, there is no off switch for this, it will just automatically start playing, what we can do is we can set up a personal automation and shortcuts, where it will automatically pause any music once it connects up to your car. To do that, what we need to do is open up our shortcuts app here. And then what we need to do is go down to automation, this is going to be an automation I want it to happen automatically.
As soon as my iPhone connects up to my car, I want it to pause anything. So I just tap on automation here. And now what we do is we go over to the plus in the upper right hand corner. When I tap on the plus I have a couple of choices here, I can create a home kit shortcut, I’m not going to do that this is going to be a personal automation. So I tap on personal automation. And now I set the condition. So what is the condition? Well, it’s when it connects up to my car. Now my car does not have CarPlay. But if your car has CarPlay, what you’re going to want to do is use CarPlay. Here, when I select this, you’re going to see I can have it run when it connects to CarPlay. My car does not have CarPlay just has Bluetooth. So what I need to do is go back, and then I swipe up, and you’re going to see Bluetooth, I tap on this. And now I choose my device. So what is my device?
Well, the device is my car. So when my iPhone connects up to this device, my car via Bluetooth, that’s going to run a shortcut. So I tap on choose, and you’re going to see my car here. Now if you do not see your car here, what you need to do is first connect up your iPhone via Bluetooth to your car. Once you do that, then you can go and select your car. So I’ve already connected my iPhone to my car, I can listen to music in my car from this iPhone. So now I just tap on my car here. I tap on Done. And I tap on next. So I’ve set my condition. Now what do I want it to do when it connects up to my car? We have the condition when it connects up to my car. But what do you want it to do? Well, from here, what we need to do is we need to go to add action. This is where we set what we wanted to do. So I tap on Add Action. And I’m just going to search for pause, because that’s what I wanted to do. There are a lot of different actions that you can select, you’re going to see we have here play pause media, that’s what I want. So I tap on it. And now what I do is I go up to where it says play pause here.
And right now what it’s going to do is it’s going to toggle, so it’s going to play and then it’ll pause and then it’ll play every time it connects is going to toggle, I just want it to pause, I want it to connect up to my car, and then pause. So I tap on this. And you’re going to see we have pause here. So I just select it. And now what it’s going to do when it connects up to my car is pause the iPhone, any media that’s playing on the iPhone. So I tap on next, I tap on Done. And now we have my shortcut here. When Dan’s iPhone 12 connects up to my Tesla. What it’s going to do is pause any media. Again, if you have CarPlay, what you may want to do is go up to the plus here to add a new automation, create personal automation, we go over to CarPlay.
We go over to connect That’s the condition when it connects up to CarPlay. Now I set what I wanted to do, I wanted to pause we go over to play pause. I select pause here. And now when this iPhone connects up via CarPlay, what is going to do is pause any media will not play any media. So that’s how we can set a personal automation to pause any media. When our iPhone connects up to our car, we can do this via CarPlay. Or we can do it via Bluetooth when our car connects up to our iPhone via Bluetooth. You do this by creating a personal automation just open up the shortcuts app, go down to automation, create a new personal automation set the condition. When do you want to run the shortcut in this case is going to be when it connects up to your car via CarPlay or Bluetooth. And then once you set the condition, you’re going to set the action. This is going to be the shortcut what you want it to do. Once it connects up to the car you want it to pause. So that’s how you can set up a personal automation to automatically pause any music or any media that is playing on your iPhone when it connects up to your car.
