Today I’m excited to share with you a valuable feature in Safari on the iPhone that can make your browsing experience more accessible and enriching. This feature allows you to translate entire websites or selected text into different languages, which is especially useful when you come across content in a language you’re not familiar with. Let’s dive into how you can make the most of this tool.

Setting Up for Multilingual Browsing

Before you can start translating, you need to add the languages you want to translate into on your iPhone. This setup is crucial for enabling the translation feature in Safari. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Open the Settings App: Begin by swiping up to access your iPhone’s home screen and tap on the Settings app.
  2. Navigate to Language Settings: Go to General, then scroll down to find Language & Region. Tap on it.
  3. Add New Languages: Tap on Add Language and select your desired language from the list. You can add multiple languages, such as French and Spanish, to your device.
  4. Set Your Primary Language: After adding a language, you’ll be prompted to choose your primary language. Simply select English or your preferred main language.

With these steps, your iPhone is now ready for multilingual browsing!

Translating Entire Webpages

Once the languages are set up, translating an entire webpage is straightforward:

  • Open Safari: Launch Safari and navigate to the webpage you want to translate.
  • Use the Page Menu: Tap on the page menu icon, which opens various options.
  • Select Translate Website: You’ll see the Translate Website option. Tap it and choose the language you want to translate the page into, such as French.

In moments, the entire webpage will be translated into your selected language, making it easier to understand the content.

Translating Selected Text

Sometimes, you may only need to translate a portion of the text on a webpage. Here’s how:

  • Select Text: Tap and hold on the text you want to translate until a menu pops up.
  • Choose Translate: If Translate doesn’t appear immediately, tap the right arrow to find it. Then select your desired language.

This feature allows you to focus on specific sections without altering the entire page.

Switching Back to the Original Language

If you wish to revert to the original language after translating, simply tap on the page menu icon again and select View Original. This will switch the content back to its original form.

This translation feature in Safari is a powerful tool for breaking down language barriers and accessing information from around the globe. Whether you’re exploring new topics or revisiting familiar ones in a different language, this feature adds a new dimension to your browsing experience.
