Top Hits in Search Results
Learn about the Top Hits category in your search results in the Notes app on the iPhone.
With iOS 14, Apple introduced a new category for your search results in the Notes app. Now, in addition to having your standard results, you now have a Top Hits category. The Notes app will place more relevant search results in this new category. See the new Top Hits category for search results in this video for Notes on the iPhone.

In this video, we’re going to be taking a look at the new Top Hits feature we have in the Notes app. This was introduced with iOS 14. With Top Hits, when we do a search in the Notes app, instead of just getting a list of results, we have a new category called Top Hits that shows us the most relevant results based on what we’re searching for. Let’s see how this works. Let’s go to my iPhone.
Let’s go and open up my Notes app. I’m going to swipe to the left. And we have my Notes app here. Now, what I want to do is I want to search my notes. I want to search for ‘photo.’ I know I have a few notes on photos. How do we search? The search bar is located at the top here, and if you don’t see it, we can’t see it here, so now what I do to get my search bar is I just pull down. This is nothing new in iOS 14. So if you do not see your search bar, you just need to pull down. Now when I search, instead of just giving me a list of all of the results, what’s going to happen is as the iPhone will give me the most relevant results and a Top Hits category. So let’s go and search for ‘photo.’ I tap in here, I type in photo, and you’re going to see, I have Top Hits. And then I also have my Notes. So what is the difference here? If we look, you’re going to see, I have ‘photo’ in this result, and then I also have ‘photo’ in this result, which is in my Top Hits. Why is it? Why is this one in my top hits? Well, it depends on the relevance of what you are looking for. This word here ‘photo’ is in the body of my text. While this word here ‘photo’ is in the title of my text. It’s in the headline of my text. So the Notes app is thinking that this is more relevant. Being that it’s more relevant, it’s going to place it in Top Hits, and be in that this one is less relevant because it’s in the body of my text, it places it in my standard results, my Notes results.
So that’s the new Top Hits we have in Notes introduced with iOS 14. Basically, when you search the Notes app, the Notes app will separate your results. It’s going to have a Top Hits and then your standard results. If a result is in the Top Hits, it may be because what you’re looking for is in its title, or maybe emphasized, so the Notes app thinks it is more relevant.
So that’s the new Top Hits in the Notes app on the iPhone.
