Send Message Effects and more
Learn how to send your photos, memoji’s, images and GIFs, and Message Effects with the Messages app for the Mac.
With macOS Big Sur, Apple introduced a few new features in the Messages app – you can now add memoji’s, search for images online, and add message effects. These message effects include balloons, confetti, and more. See how to send message effects and more in the Messages app on the Mac with macOS Big Sur.
Video Transcript (video also has closed captions):
In this video, we’re going to look at how we send message effects, as well as search for images, and use memoji’s or send memojis in the Messages app on the Mac. These new features were added with macOS Big Sur. Let’s go to my Mac.
Let’s go and open up my Messages app. When we’re looking or when we’re in a conversation, I’m in my conversation here for brew club; if we go over to the left of where we have our message or where we type our message, you’re going to see I have the little ‘a’ here. Now, if you have an iPad or an iPhone, you may recognize this as applications. When I click on this, I can see all of the different applications available to me. We do not have all of the same applications available to us on the Mac as we do on the iPad and the iPhone. But we do have four applications here that are available.
If I want to send a photo from my photos app, I select this. And now, what I’m able to do is select a photo from my photos app.
I want to send him memoji. I select my memoji stickers, and now I’m able to select a memoji.
I want to search for an image. I click on images here, and now I’m able to search for an image. Any image I click on will be added to my message.
And then our last option here is Message Effects. Now, there is a trick to making this work. The first thing we need to do before we can send a message effect, such as sending confetti or balloon, is we first have to type in a message here. If we were to just select Message Effects here, nothing’s going to happen. I’m going to select this, and you’re going to see nothing happened. That’s because I do not have a message in here first. So the first thing we need to do before we send a Message Effect is type out a message. So I’m going to type out hello. And now, when I go back over to my applications, here I go over to Message Effects; now, what I’m able to do is select what I want to use. So if I wanted to send confetti here, we can see that confetti’s coming across the screen. So now anyone that I send this to is going to get confetti.
Also, if anyone sends any one of these Message Effects to me, I’m going to be able to see them on my Mac. In earlier versions of macOS, we couldn’t send these, and we couldn’t receive these message effects. So now, to send this, all I have to do is just select it. I would then click on the arrow here, and it’s going to send that Message Effect.
So that’s how we send Message Effects and search for images, use memojis, and send photos in the Messages app on the Mac. We do this by clicking on the application button. This was introduced with macOS Big Sur. If you want to send a Message Effect, you have to type the message before you click on Message Effect.
So that’s how you use applications such as photos, memojis, images, and Message Effects in the Mac’s Messages app.
