Change a Group Conversation’s Photo
Learn how to change the photo that represents a group conversation in the Messages app on the iPad.
Apple added the option to change the photo that represents a group conversation in the Messages app on the iPad. This new feature was added with iPadOS 14. You can take your own photo, select a photo from your Photos app, select an emoji, or type a couple of letters to represent your group conversation. See how to change the image used to represent your group conversation in the Messages app on the iPad.

In this video, we’re going to look at how we can change the photo for a group conversation in the Messages app on the iPad. This is a new feature that was added with iPadOS 14. Let’s go to my iPad. Let’s first open up my Messages app. If we look over on the left side where all of my conversations are, you’re going to see I have a group conversation. Now by default, what the Messages app is going to do is it’s going to create its own photo for it. It’s going to combine all the different icons from the people that are in that conversation. I want to create my own photo for it while. To do that, all we have to do is make sure that the conversation is selected.
And then we go up to the ‘i’. This is where we can view all of the group information. In addition to changing the name, what we’re able to do is also change the photo. So I tap on this, and then from here, I have a few options on the far left. If I tap on the camera, it’s going to open up the camera on the iPad, and I can take my photo.
I can also tap on the photo icon to choose a photo from my photos library. I tap on the smiley face to choose an emoji. And then, if I want to type in a letter that represents this conversation, this group conversation, I tap on the pencil. We also have suggestions. And then, if I swipe up, I can choose an emoji.
Now we talk a lot about Mexican food. I like tacos. So what I’m going to do is choose the taco to represent this group conversation. So I tap on the taco, and when I’m finished, I tap on done, but before I do that, I can also change the color of the background to do that. We hide our keyboard here. And then we go over to style, and I’m able to change the background. So let’s go with a nice purple background here when I’m finished. I go back to done. We can see we have a new picture here for my group. Let’s go and change the name. So I’m just going to call this ‘friends.’ I tap on done. And then I tap on done one more time, and we can see we have my new icon there along with my new name.
This really comes in handy when we pin a group conversation. If you recall, we can pin these conversations. To do that, we just swipe over to the right. And now that group is up there at the top. I can easily identify it by looking at the taco. This may also remind me to ask them all for lunch regularly for Mexican food.
So that’s how we changed the photo of a group conversation in the Messages app on the iPad. We first have to go to that conversation. Then we tap on the I on the right side, the upper right-hand corner. And from there, in addition to changing the name, we’re also able to change the photo. So that’s how we change the photo of a group conversation in the Messages app on the iPad.
