Using an iPhone as a Remote

In this video, we’re going to look at how we can use an iPhone as a remote. When we’re given a presentation with Keynote on the Mac. Basically, what we do is we pair our iPhone, with our Mac using the Keynote app on the iPhone. And then from there, we’re able to use our iPhone as a remote as given the presentation. Let’s see how we do this. Let’s go to my Mac and my iPhone. Now the first thing that you’d need to do, let’s look at my iPhone here.

The first thing that you need to do is you need to make sure that you have the Keynote app installed on your iPhone, you use the Keynote app on the iPhone as the remote, we can see that I have Keynote here. The next thing that we need to do is we need to open it up. So I’m going to tap on it to open it up. And then we do not open up any presentations, what we do is we go to the upper right hand corner and you’re going to see this little remote here. If I am in a presentation, let’s go ahead and open up a presentation. I’m going to go to this to obtain presentation here. When I open up a presentation, what it will do is it’ll remove that remote icon, we need to be out of any specific presentation.

So now I just go to the upper left hand corner and I click on the back arrow to where I can view all of my different presentations. I’m not in any specific presentation. Now when I go over to the right side, here we have the remote icon. I click on this, and then I click on Continue. Now what we need to do is we need to have the Mac look for our iPhone, it doesn’t need to be on the same network. Now I’m going to go over to my Mac. And what we need to do is open up our Keynote preferences. So I go up to the menu bar and we go over to Keynote here, we select Preferences, we have our new window that opens up. And from here, what we need to do is go over to remotes. This is where we can add our iPhone as a remote and again, it doesn’t need to be on the same network.

Now when I go over to enable here, because I have the iPhone all set. When I click on this, you’re going to see I have my iPhone here. Now I need to link these up. So now I’m just going to click on link, it’s going to confirm by putting a four digit code up there, I need to make sure that they are the same code on my Mac and my iPhone. So I’m going to click on my link here. And you’re going to see we have the link on the Mac. And then we also have it on my iPhone. So I can confirm that this is the phone that I want to link up. So now all I need to do is just click on Confirm. And my iPhone is now controlling the Keynote presentation on my Mac. If I want to play this Keynote presentation, I’m going to close my preferences here and Keynote on the Mac. Now all I need to do is just tap on play on the iPhone and watch what happens. It’s going to start playing my presentation. And now it’s playing that presentation. It is starting from the slide that I had selected, so I did not select the first slide.

So it is starting from the slide that I had selected. So when you do this, make sure you have the first slide selected. Alright, so what else can we do with this remote on the iPhone? Well, if we go up to the upper right hand corner, you’re gonna see we have these two squares. This allows me to customize what I see on the iPhone. So when I tap on this, I can set if I want to see the next slide, or I can even see the current and next slide. Maybe I want to see the notes I go next and notes or current and notes or maybe just the notes only. I’m going to go with current and next I like to see what slide I’m on. And then also I want to see what the next slide is. So I select this. And now we can see we have the current slide as well as the next slide. We can also write on this, maybe I want to highlight the tulip. Well, if we go to the next slide here, we have the tulip as the current slide. And then what we do is we go up to the upper right hand corner where we have this little pencil here. When I click on this, what I’m able to do is draw on the screen and it’ll draw on the presentation. So watch my Mac as I draw on my iPhone. I’m going to go with a yellow pen here. And then I just draw, there’s a nice little tool up. When I’m finished, I just click on the X down here in the lower right hand corner of the iPhone.

And it brings me back now I can go to the next slide or the previous slide. So that’s how we use our iPhone as a remote with Keynote. Basically, what we have to do is make sure that they’re on the same network. Once you do that you download Keynote on your iPhone, and then make sure you do not have any Presentation open, go to the remote icon in the upper right hand corner, tap on Continue. Now you need to go to your Mac. Again, make sure it’s on the same network. Open up the Preferences for Keynote, go to the remote tab, and from there, you’re going to see a remote you can link it up, and then you can control your Keynote presentation from your iPhone. You can even set it up to see the next slide or your notes or draw on the screen. So that’s how we use our iPhone as a remote for our Keynote presentations.
