SUMMARY:Ask Me Anything (AMA) Webinar
DESCRIPTION:During this Ask Me Anything (AMA) webinar\, I covered a variety of topics related to Apple devices. These included tips on how to remove apps and accounts like TikTok\, not just hide them\, and how to make the iPhone default to the numbers keyboard (you can’t). I also shared some suggestions for keeping up on app updates\, which can be overwhelming for many Apple device users. \nFurthermore\, I talked about the use of CleanMyMac X and Malwarebytes\, two popular software tools used for keeping Apple devices clean and free of malware. Additionally\, I addressed a common issue that many users encounter – how to keep iMessage in sync on all devices with the same Apple ID. \nAnother topic that we covered was how to show favorites in Safari’s start page\, which can be a useful feature for users who visit certain websites frequently. Additionally\, I provided some helpful guidance on how to test the cord to a MacBook Air to see if it is charging properly. \nTowards the end of the AMA\, I covered on whether it is safe to use a personal device to access inflight airline entertainment. To wrap things up\, I shared a fun tip on using emojis for text and then held an open Q&A session where attendees could ask any remaining questions they had. SUMMARY:Ask Me Anything (AMA) Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Got Apple Tech Questions? Watch My Ask Me Anything from July 27\, 2023. These AMA\,s are where I answer your questions about Apple devices and software. In this last session on July 27th\, 2023\, we covered topics like troubleshooting Wi-Fi connectivity\, debugging Safari browser issues\, fixing iMessage syncing problems\, understanding VPNs on iPad\, and backing up photos with iCloud. Bring your Apple tech questions and I’ll share my tips for getting the most out of your iPhone\, iPad\, Mac and more. I look forward to seeing you at the next AMA! \n \n \n \n \nTopics Covered: \n\n00:00:00 – Introduction\n00:00:52 – Is it worth it to renew Backblaze?\n00:03:56 – How do I backup Photos in iCloud?\n00:16:11 – Disconnect Wi-Fi when I leave my house\n00:26:57 – Safari isn’t loading pages fully. Why?\n00:33:22 – My Messages aren’t syncing. Why?\n00:34:50 – I can’t delete an email in my Junk folder. Why?\n00:36:46 – I want my Messages to to my Phone only. How?\n00:40:06 – How Does VPN Work on an iPad?\n00:52:23 – What is Setapp?\n00:54:34 – General Q&A\n01:05:30 – Wrap Up\n\nSummary\nWritten by ai and may contain inaccuracies. \n\nAddressing Website Issues and Apple Announcement\nThe meeting started out with a discussion on Apple’s recent product announcement\, with a focus on the emphasis on artificial intelligence and the need for users to upgrade to access new features. Lastly\, they discussed the strategic implications of these changes and had a Q&A session on WWDC\, with Dan leading the discussion and encouraging support for his tutorial videos. \n\n\nApple Intelligence and AI Apps Discussion\nDan discussed Apple’s shift towards AI\, known as ‘Apple Intelligence’\, and its implications for app developers. He highlighted the integration of AI into the OS for improved processing and privacy protection\, and revealed Apple’s partnership with ChatGPT and potential future collaborations with Google and others. Due to the EU’s strict privacy laws\, Apple would not immediately roll out this feature in the EU. Dan also demonstrated the functionality of an AI app he uses\, which improves responses by understanding the user’s context and identity\, and explained a new technology that uses AI to provide expert assistance based on user profiles. The discussion also touched on the evolution of AI\, with a focus on neural networks\, and the potential for AI to learn users’ personal preferences to offer more relevant results. \n\n\nAI Integration and Apple’s Privacy Policy\nMichael and Dan discussed the integration of AI with Apple’s privacy policy. Dan clarified that Apple’s AI feature\, coming with their new iOS 18\, does not compromise user privacy as Apple is committed to keeping users’ data secure. He added that the new AI feature would not be available on older devices due to processing limitations\, and users would need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer to access it. Dan also compared Apple’s strategy with its previous focus on a single app\, like the iPhone\, and its impact on other app development. Lastly\, he mentioned the upcoming update to the mail program with AI features\, but noted that this feature would not be available until the fall. \n\n\nPivot Tables\, Categories\, and Safari Tips\nDan instructed Bob on how to use pivot tables\, specifically explaining how to categorize data effectively. He demonstrated how to add categories like age range and decade of birth for easier grouping and counting of individuals in each category. Michael and Paul provided input\, emphasizing the importance of understanding the age distribution. Additionally\, Dan shared a tip from his colleague\, Alyce\, about solving Safari’s issue with certain websites by turning off extensions before resorting to deleting the browser cache or history. The team also briefly discussed their preferences between Safari and Chrome. \n\n\nSafari vs Chrome Comparison and Testing Recommendations\nDan provided a detailed comparison between Safari and Google Chrome\, highlighting their respective strengths and weaknesses\, with a focus on performance\, battery usage\, and privacy. He suggested that users considering Chrome should explore alternatives like Edge for better efficiency and battery consumption. Ward expressed a concern about website developers not testing their sites on Safari\, prompting Dan to recommend testing websites across different browsers to avoid errors. The topic of Apple Pay versus Google Pay was left open for further discussion. \n\n\nAddressing Automatic Email Archiving Issue\nDan addressed an issue with emails being automatically archived instead of being deleted when marked as trash on Todd’s iPhone. He highlighted that this could be due to the settings of Todd’s email account and provided a detailed walkthrough on how to adjust these settings. Dan clarified the difference between archiving and deleting emails\, emphasizing that the former keeps the emails indefinitely while the latter removes them after 30 days. He also stressed that the archiving process happens on the email service provider’s server\, not on the user’s device or in iCloud. Finally\, he advised testing the settings by deleting an email to see whether it is archived or deleted as per the setup. \n\n\niPad Document Saving and Folder Management\nDan clarified to Kevin that on an iPad\, newly created documents are automatically saved in their respective app folders\, such as Pages\, Numbers\, or Microsoft Word. However\, users can move these files to other folders if needed\, using the Files app. This was a change implemented by Apple to allow users more control over their documents\, as opposed to the earlier approach where documents could only be saved within their respective app. Dan demonstrated this process using the Pages app and explained that initial document creation occurs through the app itself. \n\n\nTransferring Video Files to iPad and Storage\nKevin and Dan discussed the process of transferring video files from external drives to an iPad. Dan guided Kevin through the steps of accessing and downloading files from Dropbox to the iPad via the Files app\, making the process easier. They also discussed the organization of data storage on iPads\, with Dan explaining that the iPad’s internal storage functions as a separate hard drive while cloud services like iCloud\, Dropbox\, and Onedrive provide additional storage. Dan clarified that hidden files can’t be accessed directly on the iPad and suggested using a third-party app to view them. They also discussed the need for Kevin to have Dropbox installed on his iPad and logged in to access his files. \n\n\nSite Transfer and AirPods Troubleshooting \n\nDan shared his plan to transfer a site to a new server and expected the one-to-ones to be operational again in a couple of weeks after resolving current issues. There was a discussion about the occasional static noise issue with AirPods\, which Dan and Chrys both experienced. Dan suggested replacing the AirPods\, but no clear solution was found. He proposed troubleshooting methods including unpairing and re-pairing\, and restoring to factory settings. Bob brought up the importance of updating the AirPods’ firmware\, which Dan confirmed as crucial and could be done automatically via the Apple AirPods software. Dan committed to sharing a link to assist with checking for the latest firmware version. \n\n\n\nAI Resources for Pass Keys and Tutorials \n\nDan shared his method of utilizing AI to find various resources on pass keys\, including Apple’s support\, Fido\, The Verge\, Google Security\, and Microsoft Azure. He also emphasized that the best explanation of pass keys is subjective\, and he found The Verge and TechRadar to be useful sources.

Bruce shared that he purchased a compatible USB cable on Amazon for his iPhone 15 pro. \n\n\n\nEmail Scam\, Phone Cases\, and Zoom Summaries \n\nDan and Janet discussed a problem Janet was having with a scam email appearing in her Hotmail Calendar without her subscription. Dan suggested several steps for Janet to try and delete the email. Tom shared a new series of phone cases called Mag Safe by Otterbox\, which Bruce confirmed he also had and found effective. The group discussed the use of Zoom’s summary feature\, with Dan enabling it for their meeting and planning to share the summary on his site. George brought up the question of the difference in features between computers and mobile devices\, to which Dan responded that he would provide an update on the summary feature at the end of the meeting. \n\n\n\nExploring Ad Blockers and PDF Compression Tools \n\nDan discussed his experiences with ad blockers and PDF compression tools. He expressed his preference for the PDF compression tool within Sudap\, mentioning its customizable compression profiles\, and his use of an ad blocker called Adlock\, which he found effective on his iPhone\, iPad\, and Mac. Dan also noted that mixed results were found with ad blockers\, encouraging others to share their experiences with ad blockers. \n\n\n\nReducing PDF File Sizes Discussed \n\nDan and Bruce discussed methods for reducing file sizes in PDFs. Dan demonstrated using Preview to compress a large 59MB PDF to 25MB\, and then a second time to 21MB. Bruce mentioned saving and exporting files\, and Dan clarified the process of using the option key to access the save as feature in Preview. The discussion concluded without a final resolution on how to further reduce the file size. \n\n\n\nFile Size Reduction Test Results \n\nDan and Bruce discussed the use of a program to reduce file size. They tested the program on a large image file\, with Dan using the ‘P.Df Squeezer’ tool to compress the file significantly. They also used the built-in preview app on a Mac to further reduce the file size. Finally\, they tested the compressed file on a large keynote file provided by Barry\, reducing its size from 50MB to 16.8MB. All participants expressed satisfaction with the results. \n\n\n\nOptimizing Keynote Files: Reduce and Compress \n\nDan provided advice to reduce file sizes in Keynote presentations. He explained that this feature is particularly useful for website developers or anyone with multiple accounts. Chrys inquired about the possibility of using different profiles for different hobbies or interests\, but Dan didn’t see a significant advantage to this. Later\, Jerry had a question in the chat\, but the transcript doesn’t include the question or Dan’s response. \n\n\n\nEpson Printer Software Update Discussion \n\nDan\, Jerry\, and Roger discussed the update of software for Epsom printers and scanners from Macos. Dan advised Roger to download and install the latest drivers directly from Epson instead of the link from Apple. Chrys added that a change in software on a Mac often necessitates an update for the printer. Dan demonstrated a utility allowing users to scan documents using the built-in scanner in the Preview app on a Mac. Any do’s or do nots?\n00:56:07 – How do I add Date Stamps to Photos?\n01:01:26 – Next Event: Behind the Scenes of my Setup\n\n  \nSummary of AMA\nThis AI-generated summary may contain inaccuracies. It is provided for informational purposes only and should not be considered authoritative. Please consult the original presentation for accuracy. \nDan Shares Apple Tutorials\, iPhone 15 Impressions & Small Business \nDan\, who has been creating video tutorials for Apple software for about 10 years\, conducted an AMA session where he shared that he and his wife\, Susan G. Coleman\, run a small business from their home. He encouraged viewers to check out his tutorials on Youtube or his website. Dan also mentioned that he plans to do a behind-the-scenes video next week and will revisit a question about adding date stamps to photos at a later point. He discussed his initial impressions of the iPhone 15\, which he received a week prior. While he noted the phone’s 5 times optical zoom\, slightly improved from his iPhone 14’s 3 times optical zoom\, he found the difference not significant due to Apple’s improved camera technology across devices. Dan also appreciated the iPhone 15’s rounded edges and lighter feel\, but couldn’t provide more extensive feedback due to unfavorable weather and limited usage. \nSyncing Messages Across Apple’s Ecosystem and Android Devices \nDan discussed the syncing of messages across all devices\, especially between Apple’s ecosystem and SMS\, which is limited and doesn’t work well with Android devices. He explained the process of syncing the messages app across different Apple devices through enabling messages in the cloud in the settings app and ensuring that the messages app syncs with iCloud. Dan clarified that this synchronization would allow messages to be received on all linked devices\, including the iPad and Mac\, but noted that for messages to be received on these devices\, they must be sent to a phone number associated with them. He guided the team through the process of setting up their devices\, emphasizing the importance of certain settings such as message reception and text message forwarding. \nSMS Configurations and VPN Instructions \nDan emphasized the need for properly configuring new devices to receive messages\, particularly regarding SMS communications. He guided Bob on how to resolve an issue he had been experiencing\, where new devices were not appearing on the list or had the green check or slider turned off. Dan also provided Kevin with instructions on how to enable Express VPN on his iPad and windows computer for his travel. He demonstrated the use of the VPN app\, explaining its benefits and ease of use. Despite initial confusion\, Dan confirmed successful usage of ExpressVPN on his devices. \nClean My Mac: A RAM and File Management Solution \nDan provided an overview of the software ‘Clean My Mac’ by Mecp\, which he recommended for its ability to clear RAM and remove large files. He explained that the software also allows users to delete their web browsing history and manage extensions. Dan also mentioned that while the software is beneficial\, the user’s Mac already has built-in weekly and monthly schedules for maintenance tasks. \nHistory Management and Cookie Misconceptions \nDan discussed his approach to browsing history management\, stating that he only clears it when having problems and never on a monthly basis. He explained that deleting the history erases past visits that could be beneficial for revisiting later. Dan also addressed the topic of cookie removal\, suggesting it’s unnecessary as cookies are a standard part of web browsing and are critical for maintaining user identity across visits. He clarified that cookies are one-way streets\, with a website placing a cookie on the user’s computer to remember their login\, and the cookie cannot be shared with other websites or utilized to gather private information. Dan took control of the meeting by muting everyone to reduce background noise. He encouraged participants to interrupt him with questions or use the chat feature. Dan also discussed cookies\, stating they are not necessary to delete and he has never done so himself. \nSafari Preferred Over Chrome for Efficiency and Compatibility \nDan prefers Safari as his default browser due to its efficiency and compatibility with Mac devices. He appreciates its speed and battery-saving capabilities. However\, he acknowledges that Safari lacks the extensive range of extensions offered by Google Chrome. Despite this\, Dan uses Safari for most of his browsing needs\, and he uses Google Chrome only when necessary\, primarily for managing his YouTube channel. He also mentions the recent addition of profiles in Safari as an improvement. \nDan’s Gym Setup and Google Authentication Issues \nDan shared his recent experiences with setting up a new gym and some issues he encountered with Google authentication. He found that his ad blockers in Safari were causing a problem\, which was resolved by turning them off. Dan also discussed his preferred search engine\, noting that he often uses Google\, but also likes DuckDuckGo for its Bing-based results. He shared a tip for using Google as a fallback option when DuckDuckGo doesn’t deliver the desired results. Lastly\, he addressed a question about the viability of Super Duper as a backup software\, although the transcript doesn’t provide any conclusive information about this. \nBackup and Cloning Software Discussion \nDan and Ward discussed the use of backup and cloning software for their computers. Dan recommended Super Duper and Carbon Copy Cloner\, both of which he has used and found to be reliable. However\, Ward experienced issues with Super Duper not being able to access the backup drive at night\, which was eventually solved after some unidentified updates. Dan explained that Apple’s updates have made it increasingly difficult for these software companies to operate due to heightened security measures. Despite this\, both Super Duper and Carbon Copy Cloner are still effective tools for backing up and cloning data. \niPhone Transfer and App Advice \nDan and David discussed setting up a new iPhone\, with Dan advising that the quickest method involves using iCloud\, although this means some apps may not be immediately available. Dan recommended leaving the new and old iPhones next to each other for a faster transfer of data. George added that using a USB-C to Ethernet adapter can significantly speed up the process\, especially for larger files like apps. He also cautioned against using the ‘Erase and Restore’ feature in iMazing\, as it can erase email. David agreed to follow these steps overnight. \nPhone Simulation and Photo Timestamping \nDavid inquired about using two phones simultaneously before returning the old one to AT&T. Dan clarified that the old phone could not be used for calls after the Esim transfer to the new phone\, but it could be manually deleted. Dan instructed David to erase all content and settings from the old phone\, ready for return. Dan also provided a tutorial on how to add date stamps to photos using various apps on the iPad and iPhone\, with the key being the term “timestamp”. He recommended the app “Date Stamper”\, which allows users to select multiple photos\, customize their design and layout\, and add captions. For next week\, Dan plans to demonstrate how he manages to switch between different devices and software during his presentations using a foot pedal and special software.

SUMMARY:Reminders and Calendar: Working together in GoodTask
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation I shared how I use the robust task management app GoodTask to organize my Apple Reminders and Calendar events. I highlighted key features of GoodTask including customizable task views\, deep Reminders integration\, and powerful options to tailor the interface and task parameters to each user’s preferences. I also explained key benefits I’ve noticed like improved task visibility leading to increased productivity. The presentation led to an engaging Q&A where attendees asked excellent questions about cross-device task management that showcased GoodTask’s extensive capabilities\, many of which I’m still working to leverage in my own workflows. While I couldn’t answer every question given the app’s vast customization and functions\, it was a worthwhile discussion into how GoodTask enriches task tracking across Apple devices.
