I look forward to seeing you at the next AMA! \n\n\n \n\nTopics Covered: \n\n00:00:00 – Introduction\n00:00:52 – Is it worth it to renew Backblaze?\n00:03:56 – How do I backup Photos in iCloud?\n00:16:11 – Disconnect Wi-Fi when I leave my house\n00:26:57 – Safari isn’t loading pages fully. Why?\n00:33:22 – My Messages aren’t syncing. Why?\n00:34:50 – I can’t delete an email in my Junk folder. Why?\n00:36:46 – I want my Messages to to my Phone only. How?\n00:40:06 – How Does VPN Work on an iPad?\n00:52:23 – What is Setapp?\n00:54:34 – General Q&A\n01:05:30 – Wrap Up\n\nSummary\nWritten by ai and may contain inaccuracies. \n\nAddressing Website Issues and Apple Announcement\nThe meeting started out with a discussion on Apple’s recent product announcement\, with a focus on the emphasis on artificial intelligence and the need for users to upgrade to access new features. Lastly\, they discussed the strategic implications of these changes and had a Q&A session on WWDC\, with Dan leading the discussion and encouraging support for his tutorial videos. \n\n\nApple Intelligence and AI Apps Discussion\nDan discussed Apple’s shift towards AI\, known as ‘Apple Intelligence’\, and its implications for app developers. He highlighted the integration of AI into the OS for improved processing and privacy protection\, and revealed Apple’s partnership with ChatGPT and potential future collaborations with Google and others. Due to the EU’s strict privacy laws\, Apple would not immediately roll out this feature in the EU. Dan also demonstrated the functionality of an AI app he uses\, which improves responses by understanding the user’s context and identity\, and explained a new technology that uses AI to provide expert assistance based on user profiles. The discussion also touched on the evolution of AI\, with a focus on neural networks\, and the potential for AI to learn users’ personal preferences to offer more relevant results. \n\n\nAI Integration and Apple’s Privacy Policy\nMichael and Dan discussed the integration of AI with Apple’s privacy policy. Dan clarified that Apple’s AI feature\, coming with their new iOS 18\, does not compromise user privacy as Apple is committed to keeping users’ data secure. He added that the new AI feature would not be available on older devices due to processing limitations\, and users would need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer to access it. Dan also compared Apple’s strategy with its previous focus on a single app\, like the iPhone\, and its impact on other app development. Lastly\, he mentioned the upcoming update to the mail program with AI features\, but noted that this feature would not be available until the fall. \n\n\nPivot Tables\, Categories\, and Safari Tips\nDan instructed Bob on how to use pivot tables\, specifically explaining how to categorize data effectively. He demonstrated how to add categories like age range and decade of birth for easier grouping and counting of individuals in each category. Michael and Paul provided input\, emphasizing the importance of understanding the age distribution. Additionally\, Dan shared a tip from his colleague\, Alyce\, about solving Safari’s issue with certain websites by turning off extensions before resorting to deleting the browser cache or history. The team also briefly discussed their preferences between Safari and Chrome. \n\n\nSafari vs Chrome Comparison and Testing Recommendations\nDan provided a detailed comparison between Safari and Google Chrome\, highlighting their respective strengths and weaknesses\, with a focus on performance\, battery usage\, and privacy. He suggested that users considering Chrome should explore alternatives like Edge for better efficiency and battery consumption. Ward expressed a concern about website developers not testing their sites on Safari\, prompting Dan to recommend testing websites across different browsers to avoid errors. The topic of Apple Pay versus Google Pay was left open for further discussion. \n\n\nAddressing Automatic Email Archiving Issue\nDan addressed an issue with emails being automatically archived instead of being deleted when marked as trash on Todd’s iPhone. He highlighted that this could be due to the settings of Todd’s email account and provided a detailed walkthrough on how to adjust these settings. Dan clarified the difference between archiving and deleting emails\, emphasizing that the former keeps the emails indefinitely while the latter removes them after 30 days. He also stressed that the archiving process happens on the email service provider’s server\, not on the user’s device or in iCloud. Finally\, he advised testing the settings by deleting an email to see whether it is archived or deleted as per the setup. \n\n\niPad Document Saving and Folder Management\nDan clarified to Kevin that on an iPad\, newly created documents are automatically saved in their respective app folders\, such as Pages\, Numbers\, or Microsoft Word. However\, users can move these files to other folders if needed\, using the Files app. This was a change implemented by Apple to allow users more control over their documents\, as opposed to the earlier approach where documents could only be saved within their respective app. Dan demonstrated this process using the Pages app and explained that initial document creation occurs through the app itself. \n\n\nTransferring Video Files to iPad and Storage\nKevin and Dan discussed the process of transferring video files from external drives to an iPad. Dan guided Kevin through the steps of accessing and downloading files from Dropbox to the iPad via the Files app\, making the process easier. They also discussed the organization of data storage on iPads\, with Dan explaining that the iPad’s internal storage functions as a separate hard drive while cloud services like iCloud\, Dropbox\, and Onedrive provide additional storage. Dan clarified that hidden files can’t be accessed directly on the iPad and suggested using a third-party app to view them. They also discussed the need for Kevin to have Dropbox installed on his iPad and logged in to access his files. \n\n\nSite Transfer and AirPods Troubleshooting \n\nDan shared his plan to transfer a site to a new server and expected the one-to-ones to be operational again in a couple of weeks after resolving current issues. There was a discussion about the occasional static noise issue with AirPods\, which Dan and Chrys both experienced. Dan suggested replacing the AirPods\, but no clear solution was found. He proposed troubleshooting methods including unpairing and re-pairing\, and restoring to factory settings. Bob brought up the importance of updating the AirPods’ firmware\, which Dan confirmed as crucial and could be done automatically via the Apple AirPods software. Dan committed to sharing a link to assist with checking for the latest firmware version. \n\n\n\nAI Resources for Pass Keys and Tutorials \n\nDan shared his method of utilizing AI to find various resources on pass keys\, including Apple’s support\, Fido\, The Verge\, Google Security\, and Microsoft Azure. He also emphasized that the best explanation of pass keys is subjective\, and he found The Verge and TechRadar to be useful sources.

Later\, Jerry had a question in the chat\, but the transcript doesn’t include the question or Dan’s response. \n\n\n\nEpson Printer Software Update Discussion \n\nDan\, Jerry\, and Roger discussed the update of software for Epsom printers and scanners from Macos. Dan advised Roger to download and install the latest drivers directly from Epson instead of the link from Apple. Chrys added that a change in software on a Mac often necessitates an update for the printer. Dan demonstrated a utility allowing users to scan documents using the built-in scanner in the Preview app on a Mac. He also mentioned that the Epsilon software has a driver that can be installed for a more comprehensive scanning experience. The team also discussed the potential of using this feature in future projects. \n\n\n\nApp Sharing and Trial Plans \n\nDan shared his experience with the Setup app and its potential benefits\, while also considering user suggestions such as trying Nitro for a 7-day trial. Dan also discussed his preference for the Busy Cal app over Fantastical due to its integrated reminders. He expressed his intention to share more about the Setup app next week. \n\n\n\n\nDisclaimer: This AI-generated summary may contain inaccuracies. Any do’s or do nots?\n00:56:07 – How do I add Date Stamps to Photos?\n01:01:26 – Next Event: Behind the Scenes of my Setup\n\n  \nSummary of AMA\nThis AI-generated summary may contain inaccuracies. It is provided for informational purposes only and should not be considered authoritative. Please consult the original presentation for accuracy. \nDan Shares Apple Tutorials\, iPhone 15 Impressions & Small Business \nDan\, who has been creating video tutorials for Apple software for about 10 years\, conducted an AMA session where he shared that he and his wife\, Susan G. Coleman\, run a small business from their home. He encouraged viewers to check out his tutorials on Youtube or his website. Dan also mentioned that he plans to do a behind-the-scenes video next week and will revisit a question about adding date stamps to photos at a later point. He discussed his initial impressions of the iPhone 15\, which he received a week prior. While he noted the phone’s 5 times optical zoom\, slightly improved from his iPhone 14’s 3 times optical zoom\, he found the difference not significant due to Apple’s improved camera technology across devices. Dan also appreciated the iPhone 15’s rounded edges and lighter feel\, but couldn’t provide more extensive feedback due to unfavorable weather and limited usage. \nSyncing Messages Across Apple’s Ecosystem and Android Devices \nDan discussed the syncing of messages across all devices\, especially between Apple’s ecosystem and SMS\, which is limited and doesn’t work well with Android devices. He explained the process of syncing the messages app across different Apple devices through enabling messages in the cloud in the settings app and ensuring that the messages app syncs with iCloud. Dan clarified that this synchronization would allow messages to be received on all linked devices\, including the iPad and Mac\, but noted that for messages to be received on these devices\, they must be sent to a phone number associated with them. He guided the team through the process of setting up their devices\, emphasizing the importance of certain settings such as message reception and text message forwarding. \nSMS Configurations and VPN Instructions \nDan emphasized the need for properly configuring new devices to receive messages\, particularly regarding SMS communications. He guided Bob on how to resolve an issue he had been experiencing\, where new devices were not appearing on the list or had the green check or slider turned off. Dan also provided Kevin with instructions on how to enable Express VPN on his iPad and windows computer for his travel. He demonstrated the use of the VPN app\, explaining its benefits and ease of use. Despite initial confusion\, Dan confirmed successful usage of ExpressVPN on his devices. \nClean My Mac: A RAM and File Management Solution \nDan provided an overview of the software ‘Clean My Mac’ by Mecp\, which he recommended for its ability to clear RAM and remove large files. He explained that the software also allows users to delete their web browsing history and manage extensions. Dan also mentioned that while the software is beneficial\, the user’s Mac already has built-in weekly and monthly schedules for maintenance tasks. \nHistory Management and Cookie Misconceptions \nDan discussed his approach to browsing history management\, stating that he only clears it when having problems and never on a monthly basis. He explained that deleting the history erases past visits that could be beneficial for revisiting later. Dan also addressed the topic of cookie removal\, suggesting it’s unnecessary as cookies are a standard part of web browsing and are critical for maintaining user identity across visits. He clarified that cookies are one-way streets\, with a website placing a cookie on the user’s computer to remember their login\, and the cookie cannot be shared with other websites or utilized to gather private information. Dan took control of the meeting by muting everyone to reduce background noise. He encouraged participants to interrupt him with questions or use the chat feature. Dan also discussed cookies\, stating they are not necessary to delete and he has never done so himself. \nSafari Preferred Over Chrome for Efficiency and Compatibility \nDan prefers Safari as his default browser due to its efficiency and compatibility with Mac devices. He appreciates its speed and battery-saving capabilities. However\, he acknowledges that Safari lacks the extensive range of extensions offered by Google Chrome. Despite this\, Dan uses Safari for most of his browsing needs\, and he uses Google Chrome only when necessary\, primarily for managing his YouTube channel. He also mentions the recent addition of profiles in Safari as an improvement. \nDan’s Gym Setup and Google Authentication Issues \nDan shared his recent experiences with setting up a new gym and some issues he encountered with Google authentication. He found that his ad blockers in Safari were causing a problem\, which was resolved by turning them off. Dan also discussed his preferred search engine\, noting that he often uses Google\, but also likes DuckDuckGo for its Bing-based results. He shared a tip for using Google as a fallback option when DuckDuckGo doesn’t deliver the desired results. Lastly\, he addressed a question about the viability of Super Duper as a backup software\, although the transcript doesn’t provide any conclusive information about this. \nBackup and Cloning Software Discussion \nDan and Ward discussed the use of backup and cloning software for their computers. Dan recommended Super Duper and Carbon Copy Cloner\, both of which he has used and found to be reliable. However\, Ward experienced issues with Super Duper not being able to access the backup drive at night\, which was eventually solved after some unidentified updates. Dan explained that Apple’s updates have made it increasingly difficult for these software companies to operate due to heightened security measures. Despite this\, both Super Duper and Carbon Copy Cloner are still effective tools for backing up and cloning data. \niPhone Transfer and App Advice \nDan and David discussed setting up a new iPhone\, with Dan advising that the quickest method involves using iCloud\, although this means some apps may not be immediately available. Dan recommended leaving the new and old iPhones next to each other for a faster transfer of data. George added that using a USB-C to Ethernet adapter can significantly speed up the process\, especially for larger files like apps. He also cautioned against using the ‘Erase and Restore’ feature in iMazing\, as it can erase email. David agreed to follow these steps overnight. \nPhone Simulation and Photo Timestamping \nDavid inquired about using two phones simultaneously before returning the old one to AT&T. Dan clarified that the old phone could not be used for calls after the Esim transfer to the new phone\, but it could be manually deleted. Dan instructed David to erase all content and settings from the old phone\, ready for return. Dan also provided a tutorial on how to add date stamps to photos using various apps on the iPad and iPhone\, with the key being the term “timestamp”. He recommended the app “Date Stamper”\, which allows users to select multiple photos\, customize their design and layout\, and add captions. For next week\, Dan plans to demonstrate how he manages to switch between different devices and software during his presentations using a foot pedal and special software.

\n\n\nSite Transfer and AirPods Troubleshooting\nDan shared his plan to transfer a site to a new server and expected the one-to-ones to be operational again in a couple of weeks after resolving current issues. There was a discussion about the occasional static noise issue with AirPods\, which Dan and Chrys both experienced. No clear solution was found. \n\n\nAI Resources for Pass Keys and Tutorials\nDan shared his method of utilizing AI to find various resources on pass keys\, including Apple’s support\, Fido\, The Verge\, Google Security\, and Microsoft Azure. He also emphasized that the best explanation of pass keys is subjective\, and he found The Verge and TechRadar to be useful sources.

SUMMARY:My Favorite New Features - macOS Sequoia\, iPadOS 18\, & iOS 18
DESCRIPTION:I’m excited to invite you to a session where I’ll personally walk you through some of my favorite features from iOS 18\, iPadOS 18\, and macOS Sequoia. You’ll see the newly designed Photos interface on the iPhone and learn how integrating Reminders within the Calendar app can make your schedule seamless. I’ll show you the flexibility of the new grid system on the iPhone and iPad\, the revamped Safari Page View\, and the handy Passwords App. Plus\, you’ll witness how easy it is to mirror your iPhone with macOS Sequoia. \nJoin me and discover these features that will transform how you use your Apple devices! \n \n \n \n \nSummary was AI-generated and may be inaccurate or misleading. \nI had the pleasure of discussing my experience with Apple’s latest updates\, particularly focusing on macOS\, iPadOS\, and iOS 18. I shared some of my favorite new features and my thoughts on these updates. \nExploring the New Photos App \nI walked everyone through the new layout of the Photos app on iOS. It now features a swipe-up and down interface that allows easy navigation through different photo collections. I demonstrated how to view all photos\, filter by type\, and customize the layout to suit personal preferences. I clarified that the sort and filter icon only appears when viewing the library and showed how to move collections and utilities to the top for easier access. \nDemonstration of the Photos App Cleanup Tool \nWe explored the new layout and features of the Photos app\, including the ‘Cleanup’ tool that uses AI to remove unwanted objects from photos. I explained that while layouts don’t sync across devices\, the new collections do. I showed how to use the ‘Cleanup’ tool\, noting it’s in Beta and requires specific devices. It’s not designed to remove buildings but can remove people and other objects from photos. I answered questions about the tool’s limitations and its compatibility with third-party apps. \nCalendar App Integration with Reminders \nWe discussed how reminders now integrate with the calendar app across devices like the Mac\, iPad\, and iPhone. I explained that reminders need a due date to appear in the calendar app\, and they can be edited directly within it. I demonstrated adding new reminders and marking them as done. When Steve asked about redundancy issues between the reminders and calendar apps\, I suggested turning off the calendar subscription in the reminders app. \nNew Calendar App Features \nI highlighted new features in the calendar app\, especially on the iPhone and iPad\, such as the Compact\, Stacked\, and Detail views. These can be accessed through split view or stage manager. We also discussed the multi-day view feature\, which shows 2 or 3 days depending on the device’s orientation\, and the improvements in layout. \niOS 18 Features and Customization \nI shared the new features of iOS 18\, focusing on the flexible grid for app organization and the redesigned Control Center. I demonstrated moving and resizing app icons\, turning them into widgets\, and customizing the Control Center by adding and rearranging controls\, including a new power button. \nExploring Safari’s Page View and Reader View \nI explained the new page view and reader view in iOS 18\, showing how to add bookmarks and hide distracting items. The ‘Find on Page’ feature allows text search within a webpage. I noted that these features don’t sync across devices but require manual adjustment on each one. \nMessages and Passwords Apps \nI demonstrated the new features in the Messages app\, such as scheduling messages and adding emojis. I also showed the new Passwords app\, which replaces the password management feature in the Settings app. It allows users to view and manage passwords\, including passkeys and Wi-Fi passwords\, and supports sharing passwords through shared groups. \nmacOS Sequoia New Features \nI showcased new features in macOS Sequoia\, such as iPhone mirroring\, basic window tiling\, and a classic Mac-style screensaver. I recommended upgrading to Sequoia but advised backing up data before doing so. \niCloud Storage and Remote Device Control \nI also touched on a new iCloud feature for enhanced cloud computing functionality\, how iCloud works for storing files and keeping them downloaded locally on devices. I demonstrated how to share and remotely control another person’s iOS device screen using Messages\, requiring both parties to be on iOS 18.

SUMMARY:Ask Me Anything
DESCRIPTION:Only members can view the AMA. Are you a member? Log in to viewAMA. Not a member? Join today! \n \nAI-generated content. It may be inaccurate or misleading. \nCalendar Syncing and Merging Issues\nDan and Bruce discussed issues with calendar syncing on different devices. Bruce was experiencing inconsistent syncing between his iPhone and Mac\, and had multiple calendars that he wanted to merge into one. Dan guided Bruce through the process of merging calendars on a Mac\, explaining that calendars must be in iCloud to sync across devices. He also clarified that calendars created by the user can be merged\, but subscription calendars cannot. Chrys asked if it was possible to merge all calendars into one\, to which Dan responded that each calendar must be merged individually. \nResolving iPhone Message Sync Issues\nDan discussed the issue of messages not syncing with iPhones\, particularly with Brenda’s case. He explained that the problem lies in the settings of the Messages app\, specifically under the “Send and Receive” section. He guided the participants on how to enable the correct settings to ensure all devices receive messages. George had a similar issue\, and Dan suggested he check his settings and possibly sign out and sign back in to sync his devices. Steve also contributed to the discussion\, suggesting that George should check if both his cellular number and email address are assigned to all his devices. \nLithium-Ion Battery Charging and iPad Files\nDan discussed the best practices for charging lithium-ion batteries\, such as limiting the charge to 80% to prolong battery life. He also mentioned that the iPhone has an optimized battery charging feature that adjusts charging based on usage habits. George raised a question about syncing a Mac with a phone\, which Dan clarified. \nApple iCloud Backup System Challenges\nThe team discussed the complexities of Apple’s iCloud and backup systems. Dan explained that if a file is stored in iCloud\, it won’t be backed up\, but if it’s on an iPad and not in iCloud\, it will be backed up and stored in the cloud. However\, accessing individual files from the backup is not straightforward and requires a full restore of the device. The team also discussed the confusion between backups and archives\, with Dan emphasizing that backups are for insurance and should only be used when something goes wrong. The team also touched on the differences between running iPhone apps on a Mac and using the Finder for file management. \nManaging Download Folders and Pictures\nKevin and Dan discussed the issue of having two download folders on their devices. Dan explained that one folder is for downloads on the iPad\, while the other is for downloads on the iCloud. He suggested renaming these folders for easier identification. Kevin understood that he would need to check the iCloud folder for his downloads\, and Dan confirmed this. They also discussed the issue of downloaded pictures being placed in the photos app\, which sometimes doesn’t happen. \nApple Maps and Spark Mail Preferences\nIn the meeting\, Dan discussed his preference for Apple Maps over Google Maps\, highlighting its usefulness for finding information about local businesses. He also shared his use of Spark Mail\, a third-party email app\, which he finds more efficient than Apple’s built-in mail app due to its features like templates and AI. \nAOL Mail Service and Email Management\nKevin expressed concern about the future of AOL mail\, as he had been informed by a knowledgeable individual that AOL might shut down their mail service due to lack of incentive. Dan agreed that it could happen\, but also pointed out that it could happen with any email service. He suggested that Kevin could import his AOL mail into Gmail\, but warned that he would have to inform everyone of the change. George asked if he could turn off the junk mail feature in his iCloud mail\, but Dan suggested that it might still show even if turned off. \nWebsite Issues and Database Discussions\nDan also discussed his experience with various database systems\, including Filemaker\, Bento\, and Tabforms 5\, expressing his struggles with the latter. He offered to share his tutorials on Tabforms 5 to help others understand its features better. Dan\, Perrin\, and Steve discussed various database management tools and their functionalities. Dan recommended checking out Airtable and Notion\, which he found useful for managing large amounts of data. He also suggested using Apple’s Pages app for mail merges. The team also discussed the use of Apple’s Contacts app for managing contacts and creating groups for specific purposes like Christmas mailing lists. Dan agreed to explore these options further and possibly create a tutorial on using Contacts for more advanced tasks. \n
